Kagen lashes out at Asian papermakers
U.S. Rep. Steve Kagen (D-Wis.) lashed out at Asian paper manufacturers and the U.S. International Trade Commission today in the wake of the mill closing in Niagara, Wis.
Kagen and fellow congressmen Tom Petri (R-Wis.) and Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) met Tuesday with executives from NewPage Corp., which bought coated papermaker Stora Enso North America in December and announced last month that it would close the mill in Niagara and a machine in Kimberly, eliminating more than 400 jobs.
Ohio-based NewPage has contended that subsidized competitors from China, Indonesia and Korea have been selling coated paper in the United States at unfairly low prices. The U.S. Department of Commerce had agreed, but in November the ITC ruled that the imports did not harm the U.S. industry enough to impose duties on the Asian paper.
"If you're looking for an enemy, the enemy is quite clear," Kagen said in a conference call. "China is targeting our paper industry for extinction. That is what is happening. And they have been successful. They've been successful in convincing this administration and the ITC that it is alright to put illegal paper into our domestic market below our cost of production."
Kagen said the congressmen did hear from NewPage that it is willing to sell the Niagara mill, as long as it's not used to making competing products. He also said that the company expects to have opportunities for about 60 Niagara workers at its mill in Escanaba.
