What is the actual point of using Linux other than to be different? I got it up and running eventually, but it was frustrating because doing simple things like typing in Korean, or opening ActiveX that XP does without fuss, are either extremely difficult or plain impossible.
Also, if I want to play any games, I had to reboot and wait for the GRUB bootloader to let me select another OS, which is inconvenient and time-consuming. The same applied for opening HWP files. I followed instructions to the letter on how to install Hangul 2005 on Ubuntu, but it didn't work.
Maybe if you are running an older, slower system it could be useful for doing basic tasks like word processing, media playback and web browsing. However, if you have a new system powerful enough to run XP or Vista smoothly, what is the point in Linux? |

I haven't tried installing hangul on it. Might be a problem, though I bet if you e-mailed the guy who wrote the instructions you were following he could help you fix it.
As for activex, I just avoid it entirely. Nasty stuff, activex. And you can run apps in a seamless wine window. Same for games, though I don't really believe the claim about it not affecting performance in 3d shooters and such.
Most linux distros are much less bloated than windows so the advantage would be either running fancier effects than XP or running faster than Vista, depending on which one you would be using otherwise. |

Turning out to be healthy little "Windows vs Linux" war here...
By the way Squirrel.... thx for the OpenSuse tip. I've been trying this out for a week or so now. I quite like it. |

I wouldn't exactly call it a war. I am interested in linux and have tried to get it running twice now with two different flavors to no avail. To me this signifies that linux is not read for the average computer user who just wants it to work. If I had more time and motivation I'd probably do more trying to get it to run, but that's not going to happen.
for a home user, with no inclination to get into the nitty gritty of computers linux isn't worth the time. If you're running a server then I would say it's probably a necessity to learn it. if you are an o/s enthusiast and want to try different kinds then go for as many flavors of linux as you want. Additionally if you are a microsoft hater then linux or mac is the way to go.
If you want your computer to "just" work, avoid linux. |

Agreed. I just think that day is arriving as we speak. On my hardware all 6 distros had internet, word processing picture editing running with no extra setup. Mandriva and a couple others had appropriate 3d drivers, 3d desktop software, mp3 support, you name it all ready to go. |

See that bit I don't agree with.
How many times have you had to track down a driver for soundcard or accessory because windows doesn't have it. |
