not sure if this is common knowledge or not, but thought i'd pass it on to any fellow noobies wondering what their housing will really look like.
just did a search on youtube and there are literally dozens of vids in which english teachers give video tours of their housing accomodations. talk about convenient! i was really surprised at how good some of their places were. there were some mediocre ones as well, but nothing horrible that ive come across yet.
for any noobie wanting to get a feel for what the housing is like i suggest you check it out, it was really helpful for me. |

I think the talk of teachers getting hell holes is quite over rated. I love my place. I don't know anyone personally who has wound up in a bad place. My place even comes with a/c.
Yeah, aside from a lack of a bath tub, Korean apartments are modern, clean, efficient, and even come with a washing machine. That's not something many apartments in North America come with. |

In my hagwon days, I avoided some hell-holes by insisting to see them first, then going with another contract with better housing.
I think that has been the key factor, other than being involved in choosing my apartment once or twice.
I'm almost inclined to say things are probably better in regards to housing overall, just because Korea is slowly replacing a lot of old, crappy buildings with newer ones. Obviously, there is a lot of crap out there to be had, though.
My hagwon friends tend to have small efficiencies, or really old larger places (2 bedroom place, in once case).
It has always amazed me that a really nice new place sometimes costs about the same as a crappy old hole of a place. That's why it really pays to look around. |

I have read that the apartments that you can get can be over 600 square feet or above? If so, that is almost double the size that I live in right now. |

It happened to me in 2001. It's only overrated if it doesn't happen to you. Nothing like coming halfway around the world for mold, cockroaches and scum. |

I found that with Toronto rents too. Scary what people thought they could charge $600 a month for in 1997. |

OP,
Would you mind telling me what you actually used as your search-phrase on youtube?
I'm curious to see what you found.
Thanks |
