Anyone here use this? It looks like it has so much potential as a media center and gaming console, hell they even have their own free online gaming service as an alternative to xbox live after you mod the box.

I've been looking into turning my x box into a Linux Media Center. I was going to give it a whirl this weekend. It's a great way of turning my much neglected XBox into a useful machine once again.

I didn't know about the free gaming service though! That's even better! Very Happy

Its definitely worth it. It plays every kind of media file out there!! Only draw back is that the xbox isn't powerful enough to play most HD stuff.

You can install XBMC on linux and os/x too.

Total deal-breaker these days. What are you going to do without HD playback in 2008?!

I just got the Evolution X Dashboard running on my X box. Going to try running some emulators on my xbox tomorrow morning. Going to try and put XBox Media Center on it too tomorrow. I'm tired and will finish the project off tomorrow. I had to convert my one x-box controller to a usb end to plug into the pc (so i could load data onto the memory card). All in all, it's been a neat fun, and rewarding project.

I'm aiming to do a write up as well of my experiences with the xbox media center.

Reactionary,

I'm not quite sure yet myself. I just finished getting Xbox Media Center (xbmc) installed. It's pretty spliffy! My only concern is how high the cpu of the x box runs (45-50 degree Celsius). I'm tired from attempting to dog sled today and will toy with it some more tomorrow.

Under 'System Settings' I think (I'm at work and can't remember for sure what menu) you can set the fan speed or set a temperature you'd like to keep it at.

i think the high temp readings are a bug. mostly i have a low reading, but sometimes it will read as that high for no reason. but the box aint hot to the touch (as i imagine it would be at 60 C)

I'm using it and love it.
Setting up for videos is a headache, so I stream them to XBox through XBstream

As far as music, photos it's really good, but the best part is recording TV.
