I just had my exam today at St Marys Hosp (which is apparently on a list of 'accepted' places to get your Medical Checks done), in Uijeongbu.
I had blood, urine, eyes, and hearing tests. Followed by a Chest Xray, Dental check and Blood Pressure taken.
The hospital gave me a standard form that I took with me from one room to the other - all were easy to locate as they were side by side on the 8th floor (the new part of the Hosp).
It cost me 60,000 and took me around 2 hours. (My BP was too high, so they wanted me to 'relax for 10 mins' so they could take it again. I had to do this 3 times and it was STILL too high, but they finally let me go home!)
Really friendly staff, helpful .. and plenty of Nurses who speak good English. |

For argument's sake, let's assume that it is a hakwon, would the requirements still be the same?? |
Yes, the requirements are the same. EPIK and the other public school programs have been asking for a "recruitment health exam" (채용신체검사서, chaeyongsinchegeomsaseo) for years. The Immigration regulations for all E-2 holders now include the same requirement. A 채용신체검사서 is a standard physical required of many new hires in Korea. The Immi regulations use this specific term, and add that it must include TBPE, HIV, and cannabinoid tests. It's not just the tests they want: they want a standard new hire physical with the extra tests.

Some people labor under the impression that only chest xray, hiv and drug tests are called for in the case of hakwons. |
Nope. Everyone needs the physical with the addition of the drug and HIV tests.

The link that you refer to uses the phrase "must include". So in other words it's sure to be the whole gamut and then the extras thrown in for good measure. |
That's the way I read it. The exam is to be the standard recruitment physical with the addition of drug and HIV tests as listed in the regulation. |

My opinion is that most medical establishments won't know what to do in the case of hakwons, for the lack of clear guidelines.
Just to be sure, they'll toss the book at you each and every time. |
The guidelines are actually fairly clear. Immi requires the standard Korean recruitment/new hire health exam (채용신체검사서, chaeyongsinchegeomsaseo) with the addition of TBPE, cannabinoid, and HIV tests. The first two are for drugs, the last is self-explanatory.
In order to avoid having them "toss the book at you," I strongly suggest printing out the relevant section of the regulation in Korean and taking it with you to the clinic. |

Today I waet through the medical examination here in Pohang. First, eye examination. Second, blood pressure. Third, EKG (yep) an EKG. Fourth, dental examination (yep) checked for cavities, Fifth, blood test. Sixth, urine sample. Seventh, chest x ray. This is for anyone who is wandering about the health exam |
sounds similar to the test i had this past december.
urine sample > blood pressure > eye exam > height/weight > little listen to the heart > chest xray.
mine was also "free". it's something that all city employees have to do. people who are over 35 or 40 have to crap in a paper bag and hand it over. |

I had neither an EKG nor a dental exam... interesting that there are different policies. |

Sounds like fun times. When are these health checks normally done? I'm moving to Gangjin next month and my recruiter doesn't seem to know anything about these health checks. I was reading on the Self Health Check Form that they're done within 90 days of being in the country. Interesting that some people had to pay and some didn't. |

I have heard some schools are moving very quickly to get the teachers to pass this medical check after thay arrive so that they do not lose a teacher already working in the classroom.
Already in my area I have heard of a teacher who failed the medical as she had failed to declare diabetes medication. She got her visa cancelled immediately when blood/ urine tests showed this problem existed. The school were apparently furious about her not telling the truth on the first statement

At first, I didn't think this sounded right. But after I got my results back and saw that they included a full array of blood work, I realized that it is indeed plausible. (see my later post in this thread)

What if one fails the dental check? What exactly is a DENTAL check going to find? Brush your teeth more if you want to work here? Obviously TB tests are a good idea of you work around children, but my breath isn't going to KILL anybody. |
