ask your boss for a contract phone signed under a korean's name. I had a phone waiting on my desk when I arrived in Korea, I am sure if you are on good terms he/she will oblige.
You can pay the bill yourself monthly i.e you don't have to give the money to the person who signed for you. |

| i'm positive that sk & ktf both carry phones w/ "sim" cards now. you'll need to pick up a new model though, so a phone plan is the way to go if you want to save some cash. i can't offer much help in terms of your area. |

yep.......... i did this when i first arrived. The monthly bill is deducted automatically from YOUR bank so little danger for the Korean sponsor. |

| Just get a phone in your name. If one vendor refuses, go to the next. It's not as if there aren't many of them around. |

If you put down a deposit and you keep your payments up, you get the money back when you turn the phone in.
Also, they don't use SIM cards in many of the phones in Korea (though Samsung and LG are worldwide producers of phones) and they keep phone records at the phone service provider, so you might be able to delete numbers from your phone manually from your handset, they keep a record of your call history on record, and if you change phones, you have to manually input the data into the phone again.....
As for the cheapest, I found 010 to be very reasonable when I had it.
I think another poster had the right idea; try to arrange for your boss to get and sign the phone to his name, but the down side to that would be he might be incline to deduct the charges from your pay (and then if your boss is not the honest type, he might try to sneak by some extra pay to be taken out under the guise of cellphone charges)-- but like many things in Korea, it is a gamble..... |
