I'm starting at a university very soon and was wondering what is proper attire for teaching and what sort of work am I expected to do in the first few weeks. I expect that it's all going to be fairly chaotic the first week while everyone is getting their schedules hammered out.

Is a suit too much? Would it be a good idea the first week?

I'm a bit nervous, I've taught adults before but only one to one.

They are not adults.

You have to still think of them as children. Wear a pair of dress slacks and a nice shirt or a suit. It's up to you. Do not give up your role as teacher, no matter what. You are the adult- they are the kids.

It's not like teaching adults, at all...

adults.....ha ha ha....good one.....

seriously though....they're just kids who drink and occasionaly shave.

Dress the way you want to be perceived. I would go no less than jacket and tie, and nice jeans.

and live at home with their moms..... adults leave the nest at 18. The average age for a Korean becoming an adult is 35.

A good idea the first week might be to have open discussions and introductions. During this time you can tell the students what your expectations are regarding attendance, assignments, homework, tardiness, etc. Take notes cause during this open, relaxed period you will discover a lot about the students...who is serious about English, who's a goof off, who is disrespectful, who you can use to help peer teach, etc.
You will probably have a text book assigned....

The first week or two dress to impress with a nice haircut. Ponys are to be demurely tied back, shackles and gold chains and or Bruno Gerussi medallions are to be removed from nose and or view. Winking kewpie girl tatoos covered by button down long sleeves. Then keep your sport coat but get rid of the tie. Then put the tie back on again for midterms with another haircut. Then remove it not putting it on again until finals. This keeps everyone forgetting you may only have one tie. At all times do not remove pants.

Jeans, Jesus open toed sandals, converse sneakers and the like are the first options to select for the beach and the first ones often considered at cut list discussions. Ditto Buddhist monk pants wearers, or people wearing things you might see locals wearing in Thailand. Etiquette matters most when budgets tighten around English programs. Dress as to fade into the walls or supply room sundry goods. Be bland but clean.

Try to keep it semi-professional looking. Thank God for Dockers!

That's hilarious since that's exactly the brand of clothing I stocked up on on a recent trip to Taiwan. I always liked Dockers. Seriously, Dockers clothing or anything similiar is good enough...slacks, nice button-up shirt with collar, brown/black leather shoes and, of course, white socks.

Can't you just dress the way your coworkers dress?

If you got the job, and you have to ask these questions, then they screwed up by hiring you.

No worries. Run with it. Welcome to university employment in Korea.

I wear stubbies and a wife-beater T-shirt.

This it the only pic of Bassexpander you're going to get, so love it up!

Yeah, but I just bought a few suits expecting the worst. It appears all of the long termers are all quite casual. I guess, in risk of being overdressed I'll wear a suit the first couple weeks and see how it goes from there.

I resemble that remark! Answer: Experience, friends, and knowing what to do with lemons!
