This may not apply in your case but a good teacher once said to me:

If your voice is sore you're probably talking too much. In other words, focus the activities around the students talking and interacting rather than around yourself.

Useful advice in any situation. Words well even without a sore throat.

Paul,

I appreciate you making that point above.

If you are screaming at your students, perpetuating teacher-centered lessons, etc., you may very well lose your voice. Tea, water, other liquids, etc. might be great short-term cures, but if you want to avoid the problem all together, you may want to consider developing a more effective way to teach your students that is conducive to a healthy sound!

Could it be the pollution? The second-hand smoke?
Naw, it must be the teacher...

There was I thinking the OP was looking for cold remedies and what other folk do when they're in this situation... funny how some people immediately decided she'd lost her voice by screaming at the kids.

Anyone got any suggestions for stuff to do when your vocal chords aren't in good shape?

CLG

Funny how some people assume she was looking for cold remedies.

Well, OK, then sore throat remedies.
We can't assume she has lost her voice because she was yelling at them. Kids tend to be noisy...she might have been competing with their volume so they could follow her directions.
It's cold season. Now is the time to get the sore throats and runny noses. Nothing really incriminating in her inquiry.

There were no assumptions.

The post began with "If..."

It very well may have hit the mark with those that became defensive!

Who said anyone was screaming at their kids? Please don't jump to insane conclusions and make rediculous accusations veiled in the form of an "if" statement.

Who said anyone was perpetuating teacher centered lesson? Please don't jump to insane conclusions and make rediculous accusations veiled in the form of an "if" statement.

Who said anyone needed to develope a more effective way to teach their students? Please don't jump to insane conclusions and make rediculous accusations veiled in the form of an "if" statement.

Austin: I tried to make it very clear that this may not apply to CLG. It appears that your style of presentation was less than clear because even though we posted similar advice, people are incensed by how you frame your advice yet not at mine. If you are seriously interested in putting forward a helpful word of advice (which I seriously doubt at times), you might want to put some careful thought into adapting your style of presentation.

Add me to the list of sore throaters. Crying or Very sad And no, nothing's been going in there that shouldn't, before you ask.

This is rather odd, sinse no one did in fact ask, however I can't for the life of me think of what you may be refereing to.

I was having the same problem in my classes. My voice has been really ragged lately, and then I cleaned the filters in the classroom heaters. I'm doing much better now.
