Let's say you wanted to get into the world of Blu-Ray. You already have, or intend to buy, a 1080p flat-panel. LCD or Plasma.

Pros and cons.....


Do you think the dedicated player would send out a better signal than the PS3?

Do you think all the other stuff a PS3 does would totally blow away a dedicated player?

How will the prices compare in 2008?

I would go with the PS3 as well. It's cheaper (for now), plus there's something about it that allows it to adapt --- I'm not sure whether it is a software player that gets software updates or if it is a hardware player that gets firmware updates, but yeah 1st generation standalone Blu-ray players can't play some of the new Blurays, yet somehow the PS3 can, even though it was released at the 1st generation Blu-ray stage. If the PS3 uses a software video player, then the output of a standalone player would be better... something you might want to look into. For example, the PS2 had a DVD-ROM, yet it used a software movie player, not a hardware-based one like the Xbox, thus the Xbox and standalone DVD players had better output.

Then on the other hand, if you're getting 1080p, is there going to be THAT MUCH of a difference? I don't know.

Plus you can't go wrong with the games and other multimedia features that comes with a PS3

definately PS3 it is or it's going to be an all-round entertainment centre for your home. You can use it for Blu-ray, games, and loads of other stuff I don't even know about. Im guessing like the Xbox it is linked up to the PS3 network, you can plug your mp3 player in, downloadable games, etc.
And for me one of the better things about the PS3 and Xbox 360, DivX playback, no more burning downloaded movies to DVD or having to watch them on your laptop screen.

Xbox 360 just pulled their HD-DVD drives because of the end of the format war. It's more than possible that they'll start selling external Blu-Ray drives for the Xbox 360 in the near future, something to keep an eye out.

IMHO, Xbox 360 is a better all around system than the PS3 because of the games and the price. The hardware issues that plagued the older models have been resolved in the newest releases, as well.

Also not got the same hardware as the 80gb or the original 60gb models. Been reading on some of the fanboy forums how people are cashing in their 40gbs to buy second hand 60's

I love my 40gb PS3. It's very, very quiet.

I have yet to read about a mass of drive failures on 40s. I do know that plenty of people who bought 60s or 80s were spreading angry rumors about cheapened electronics inside the 40s, but it was before they were even released. Sour grapes, I think.

The 40s are not backwards compatible with PS2 and PS1 games, and can't do Super Audio CD's (big whoop... barely 30 jazz titles to choose from, and a few old token rock albums, anyway). Not a concern for me, as I only watch movies on it, and sometimes play free downloaded demo games from the Playstation store.

I will weigh-in that I think games on the PS3 suck compared to the 360. And I don't even own a 360. I can tell just by looking at them in the stores. Far better average frame rates. Far better game selection.

The 360s were too scary of a proposition for me, however, with all of the "red rings of death" everyone was getting. They couldn't play blu-ray anyway, and HD-DVD never even got off of the ground in Korea. Blu-ray sort of has.

As I said, I watch BR movies. It also upscales standard DVDs really well. The best place to buy BR movies is in Technomart at Gangbyeon. There are some movie places on the next-to-top floor. One is near a corner, if memory serves. Prices are usually around 22,000 won. The place in Yongsan tries to rape you at 30,000 to 40,000 plus on many titles.

I have over 100 titles now. I just bought AC/DC Live on Friday. I don't recommend it. That title really looks horrible.

And I'll be the first to say that the PS3 remote you have to purchase separate from the system is a joke.

Touch any button on that thing, and your system turns on. Worse -- no on/off button. They expect you to memorize pushing the PS button, followed by 2 enters (and be lucky that you didn't bump another button to put you somewhere else in the menu, or this combo won't work right).

Nothing like having to power-up your TV to see how the hell to turn the thing off every other time. It's annoying as hell. And you can't easily add another remote, because the PS3 remote runs on bluetooth.

You want a PS3 because it can be connected to the internet. If you buy a BluRay player today that is not connected to the internet - it will not be able to take advantage of the BD2.0 spec coming out this year. With a PS3, you will easily be able to download an update that gives you said capability.
