I may leave Korea quite soon and go to Japan. What's it like over there in terms of ESL teaching and housing?

AFAIK, it is not the norm for employers here in Japan to provide free housing to ESL teachers. Many will help you find a place and may even own/lease apartments for use by their instructors, but they will most likely charge you rent for them.

I should point out that I am not involved in ESL, so don't take ^ that as gospel.

You might do better browsing this site.

If it's any use to you, I know of a small apartment in Kobe that will become available later this month.

Very rare in Japan. Some schools do provide housing but you will you will to pay the rent and utilities but not the key money. The JET program usually provides housing at a greatly reduced rate (I paid only Y8,000 per month). All said, the general rule is NO, school do not provide housing.

ESID. every situation is different.

as said, some places will provide you with housing, others not (but, may lend support to help you find housing).

if you have to find your own you might have to pay key money, money to the realator, etc.
you'll also need your workplace to act as your guarantor.

some places will not rent to foreigners, so be prepared to look around if you need to set up your own place.

1k = 1 room with a kitchen
2dk = 2 rooms with a dining room/kitchen.
2ldk = 2 rooms with a living room/dining room/kitchen.

i live in a 2dk, the market rent is 68,000 yen a month (i think). but i get a subsidy from work.

depending on where you go it can be more or less expensive than that.

if you plan on driving, you'll have to pay for a parking space. if the apartment offers it, it could be 10,000-30,000yen a month for the space.

some schools offering housing and some offer subsidized housing. Many schools do not offer any housing at all. Some big chain schools might provide you with an apartment but charge you Y50,000 or so a month for rent, which they take out of your salary each month. It also depends on where you live. Some high school ALT teachers get free or subsidized housing.

It just all depends.

It's the tide in opposition to the backwards, xenophobic, ignorant and downrightretarded new visa regulations-I'm guessing those posts will decrease once they are repealed.

I am considering leaving in response not only to the regulations but to certain cultural problems one deals with in conjunction with the regulations. Essentially, Korea's government leaves us vulnerable to
shuysters. I am exploring my options to go to Japan. I don't mind paying some rent if necessary.

I know very little about the job market in Japan.

But the job I attained will have subsidized housing.
