| I have no problem with people who run out on their contract because of bad housing or terrible bosses, but I just found out via facebook that a girl I work with is planning to leave this Monday. I knew that she was disappointed in the school, and was always planning to leave early, but I thought she would at least give some notice. Obviously it would be pretty tight of me to rat her out, but at the same time, if I don't I know I will end up working from 10am till 9pm. Not to mention the fact that my school has just gotten over some pretty serious financial problems, so I would really hate to think that things might get bad again because we are missing a foreign teacher. Any advice? |

Don't be a rat.
If you work from 10a-9p, you'll make some pretty coin. Then, they still may get another teacher.

Do you think that if you tell your boss, that they will be able to find a legal replacement by Monday? I highly doubt that they could.
As a manager myself, I hate the idea of runners, and thankfully I have only had 1 in the past 3 years.
I think that you are going to get more work either way you go. In the end, the question is, do you want to look good in your boss' eyes, or do you want to stick to your idea "it is tight to right a person out?"
I would make sure that all your preparation for next week is done. |

I don't know the circumstances, but some Western teachers can't stand living in Korea for whatever reason. It is not Paris, it is not Rome, so it can be a major adjustment for some and you have people doing runners, because they can't handle the culture. Where I can't handle the culture is if I am getting mistreated financially or the environment is very hostile. That, I can understand. A friend hated the school's environment, so she left. I kind of understood. She didn't really like Korea, either. I like Korea somewhat, but I try to be very tolerant, for some it's hard to like the place with the schools' cultural politics.
Let the girl go. People in the US quit jobs all the time. This is what people are used to. I have known of people who didn't show up after training. I know she signed a contract. Obviously, your co-worker is miserable here. She is going to leave at some point. Also, there are risks when giving notice. I think you should ideally give notice, but often you get crap*ed all over you when you do that. Koreans often don't make it easy to just give notice. |

I found out only after I signed the contract, so there wasn't much I could do. But to be fair the school has handled it pretty well, I have never been paid late, and they haven't been stingy about overtime. They did, however, cut the school buses and a few other things here and there, including one of the kindergarten classes, which is why my coworker is upset. She was suppose to teach that class, and she picked the school because she thought she was teaching kindergarten. |

| yeah i know, thats what i've been thinking. at this point i dont think it will make a difference so i guess theres no reason to say anything. i think im just a little bitter about having to put in tons of overtime, but cest le vie.... |

Ever hear of the expression "shooting the messenger"?
- why didn't you stop her?
- why didn't you tell them sooner?
