Vermont Towns Vote To Arrest Bush & Cheney
Wed Mar 5, 12:41 AM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Voters in two Vermont towns on Tuesday approved a measure that would instruct police to arrest President George W. Bush
and Vice President Dick Cheney for "crimes against our Constitution," local media reported.

The nonbinding, symbolic measure, passed in Brattleboro and Marlboro in a state known for taking liberal positions on national issues, instructs town police to "extradite them to other authorities that may reasonably contend to prosecute them."

Vermont, home to maple syrup and picture-postcard views, is known for its "liberal" politics.

State lawmakers have passed nonbinding resolutions to end the war in Iraq and impeach Bush and Cheney, and several towns have also passed resolutions of impeachment. None of them have caught on in Washington.

Bush has never visited the state as president, though he has spent vacations at his family compound in nearby Maine.

Roughly 12,000 people live in Brattleboro, located on the Connecticut River in the state's southeastern corner. Nearby Marlboro has a population of roughly 1,000.

Racking up big poll numbers there igotthisguitar in the tradition of Mike Gravel.

I'm sure Bush and Cheney are distressed over not being able to visit those towns or partaking in Ben and Jerry's ice cream fresh from the nutbar farm.

But somehow I think they'll press on.

Just a hunch, dude... Rolling Eyes

I said it before and I'll say it again: if Bush were a Democrat, he'd have been not only impeached, but probably imprisoned by now.

Yes, stillnotking, what verifiable acts of perjury has Bush committed?

Inquiring minds want to know.

And as I recall the other two impeached presidents were both Republicans.* So much for that conspiracy theory.

OK, so Johnson was a Democrat but he served in a Republican administration--close enough.

Bush has done some pretty bad things, but these two measure are a joke. Even I can admit that much.

The way I understand it is Bush can only be arrested IF he goes to those two towns. Yeah, like that's going to happen.

Ben & Jerry's is concocting a special flavor just to lure George W. It's been dubbed "Crawford Caramel."

But unless those Vermont cheddarheads can manufacture some serious BBQ, it ain't goin' to happen, partner.

None. And my statement wasn't a conspiracy theory in any way. What I'm saying is that the ability of a party to impeach opposing Presidents depends primarily on party unity. The Republicans have it, the Democrats don't. Think of it as a compliment. If a Democratic President ever hits a 19% approval rating, the Republicans will figure out a way to impeach him or her.

Surely you're not naive enough to think Clinton was impeached because lying about a BJ is somehow uniquely awful. Impeachment isn't like other courtroom proceedings; it's political theater through and through. The severity of the transgression makes little difference, and heck, under the law Congress can impeach a President for any reason they damn well please.

These two fairly small towns made a symbolic statement about a deeply unpopular president over a deeply unpopular foreign policy. What's the problem?

That is not what they did at all. They cited "crimes against the Constitution" and employed an unmistakable legalistic language ("arrest," for example).

When people speak that way, they ought to specify exactly which crimes against the Constitution they reference and, again, as the Constitution specifies, when talking "arrest," they ought to itemize their charges in a timely manner.

What is the problem in asking them to clarify this, or, failing to do this, asking them to step back from their hyperbole and talk like adults?
