| So, co-teacher F-ed up again, or maybe I did for not bringing up this issue earlier. I'm getting my severance pay deposited in my Korean bank account after I fly this Sunday, and the school is telling me I can't get it deposited in my Chicago bank. I'm leaving for the Ngonghyup bank this afternoon to file for an ATM mastercard so I can withdraw money from my Korean bank when I get home. Am I getting screwed? Has anyone done this? That cow told me it takes a day to get my ATM card and my eyes just rolled to the back of my head. I hope to hear good stories... |

| can't you withdraw it all over the counter? Seems the best and easiest option. |

| I see... then international atm is your only bet unless you can transfer via internet banking? |

| NO NO NO NO NO NO......are you really trusting your severance to be completed to your satisfaction??? NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER leave the country without your severance in your pocket (or bank...you get the point!!) I truly can't believe you're even CONSIDERING this. |

Not to rub salt in your wounds, but I'm willing to bet that your severance is exactly what you won't be getting after you fly.
Is it too late to change your flight? Try anyway. |

And don't tell your school you changed it. |

I think you're right nomad-ish.
I think the best thing to do, is to call the pension office with your pension ID number and ask what your balance is. Just count the number of years, and consider it months wages per year. Fractions of a year after the first year count too.
If they have been putting in correctly, then I would guess you will get paid correctly. If your balance is off, then I would be very very worried. |

| poet...the OP isn't talking about pension...the OP's concern is severance...a gov't agency with precedent dealing with pension payments I trust...walking out on a school...public or private...without severance...you might as well kiss it goodbye. NO WAY SHOULD YOU WALK AWAY FROM A JOB....ANY JOB....WITHOUT YOUR SEVERANCE PAYMENT IN YOUR POCKET! |

OP-Tell your school you need the severance pay on the last day of work. If they tell you that they can't come up with it by that day, it might be an indication that they are going to have a hard time coming up with it after you leave.
A lot of foreigners have complained that "international ATM cards," don't work outside of Korea. I know that in my case mine didn't and there wasn't anything I can do about it. It might help to explain to the school that you won't be able to withdraw the money from your Korean bank so you need the severance on the last day. It also might help to explain that if they are going to pay you 2 weeks after the contract is over, you'll need to cancel your flight and reschedule it because you won't be able to withdraw the money. |

Dongtan Tony...Yup, totally blew that one.
I'm changing my story to what the other guy said. DO NOT leave without it. Camp out in their lobby if you have to. |

Yea, dang, that blows. Well, I didn't get the ATM card yesterday and we both agreed that the money will be deposited in my US bank account. Does someone have ANY good experience with this. Just let me leave this country positive at least.
...and no, staying in the lobby till I get it is no option...I've been waiting for this day since I got here. I'll just keep my fingers crossed |

Give them everything they will need for the transfer:
SWIFT Code, routing number, account number...get the paperwork ready for them, leave dates/amounts/signatures blank....demand they submit the completed remittance form immediately after deposit!!
Good luck!! I'm pulling for ya!! |
