The article discusses the possibility of allowing Chinese nationals a chance to come to Korea visa-free.
But I am not posting the article for the essence of the article itself.
I am going to quote the readers reactions to the article as well.....

Opening the border may increse crime rate but it's risk worth taking. China has a lot to offer Korea.

This was the only positive one I could find about the article.........

The idea is good, but this can create increasing number of illegals in a very small country.

If there is anyone to judge whether it's good or not it's Koreans only.

Gosh!!!......alot of these posts sounds kinda' like the way me and a few others view the possibility of letting Koreans enter the VWP.......
And speak about the hardships Koreans have to go through to get a US visa......BOO~HOO!!!!!!....... the article blantantly admits that Korea makes the visa process difficult for the Chinese because Koreans are afraid that if they open the floodgates and allowed Chinese nationals a chance to enter Korea, that the crimerate would increase.....

REALLY????
So if the US lets Koreans come under the VWP, wouldn't there be a bigger chance that many people would come to the US and overstay to open their shops and wouldn't it be almost like giving prostitutes the green light to come here to solicit their trade......I think so.......

I have a better idea: I would support Korea entering the US VWP if Korea goes ahead and allows Chinese national a chance to enter the country without the restrictive tourist visa regulations.........

Go ahead Korea, I dare you!

For Chinese to go to Korea, they first have to freeze roughly $10k in their bank accounts. The Chinese banks make it worse (this was before foreign banks were up and running, so it may be easier now) by freezing the money for the length of the visa, beyond time actually stayed in Korea.

This system is a holdover from when defections were more common. And obviously its discriminatory: Koreans only want Chinese with wealth to come to Korea, not those who will stay and take crappy employment.

When my ex-wife went to Korea, she had to freeze only about 50,000rmb (around $5,000) and provide a certificate of proof to the Korean consulate along with other documents.

But what got me was the amount of static I got for posting my comments about the possibility of the crime rate going up if Korea entered the US VWP, and being called a racist among other things, when Koreans were posting the exact same things I was posting. As if they could be excused and I couldn't because the comments were coming from Koreans and it was 'unexcusable' for foreigners to say such things.....outlandish!

I truly think LMB want an inflow of chinese laborers who can take jobs in the construction industry and in smaill industrial plants. With his 747 plans for the economy, he wants to keep the wage pressures off the owners. By letting in Chinese workers, you also get cheaper labor for the restaurant industry, and lots of young women working the entertainment industry~ this being a socail aspect the locals like.

But you wouldn't believe all the protesting and complaining that went on there.....it is very hypocritical......but I do also agree that there could be a good side to it.....if managed correctly, which it won't.

Visa-Free Visit Planned for Chinese

By Kim Tae-jong, Park Si-soo
Staff Reporters

Beginning this summer, the government plans to allow visa-free entrance for Chinese nationals.

Justice Minister Kim Kyung-han said Friday the measure is part of ongoing efforts by the new government to attract more tourists.

``The ministry will continue to ease visa restrictions on Chinese nationals so that we can get more Chinese tourists and hopefully help boost the economy,'' Kim told reporters at Incheon International Airport.

He visited the airport to inspect the immigration system for the first time since assuming his post. Kim said the government will give priority to easing restrictions on foreign tourists.

Visa-free entrance for Chinese nationals will be possible from July to September on a temporary basis and will be extended depending on its effectiveness, Kim said.

Currently, Korea runs a visa-free program on nationals from 49 countries but the strict and complicated visa policies keep Chinese tourists from entering Korea more regularly.

The number of Chinese tourists visiting Korea stood at 920,000 last year, accounting for only 2.7 percent of the total Chinese tourists traveling overseas.

The government will also introduce the multiple visa system to more Chinese people from late March to allow them easier and more frequent trips to Korea.

Plans are under way to introduce a system under which Chinese tourists visiting Korea with a group tour program will be exempted from filling out disembarkation cards.

There are however concerns that the deregulation scheme could increase illegal immigration.

As of March 7, there were a total of 230,000 illegal immigrants reported in Korea, of which 45 percent were Chinese.

According to the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, Chinese were involved in about 30 percent of all drug crimes in 2007 involving foreigners.

A total of 58 Chinese drug offenders were arrested by the end of November last year, a more than four times increase from a year before.

``We predict the number of Chinese-related crimes, especially illicit drug trading, will increase should the government deregulate visa regulations for Chinese tourists,'' a prosecutor said.
