But it's not. That's the appeal. The locals know what's good. The majority is residential, there are just some busy areas that are entertaining enough and don't draw the party crowd. Hyehwa is the biggest "party" area, it's not in Seongbuk-gu and it isn't a club scene at all. It's an artsy, musical, university and bar scene. Seongbuk-gu is the kind of place you want to live because it's near the city, it has it's own local flavor and none of BS you see in Itaewon or Hongdae makes it so far north. A large number of foreign ambassadors also call Seongbuk-gu their home away from home on a big hill above Sungshin's Women Uni station. In the city, but away from the drama.

It is one of my favorite areas of Seoul. You can live there and have many things around - like shops, stores, farmer's markets with cheap food (shijang like bomun shijang or jegi dong shijang) cheongyangni station close by....it is fairly close by taxi from hongdae or itaewon if you wanna go home after hours....plenty of drinking places near HUFS, Sungshin, Hyehwa is close by, etc....However, it is one of the older parts of Seoul - not so developed, lots of smaller streets, older buildings and stuff...I like it all in all.

Oh, and drinking places are more Korean than westernized....in their looks, menu and clientele. In other words - you get good anju, good service and way cheaper prices and things get busy....so you can meet people and stuff....but there may not be enough (or at all?) foreigner places where foreigners congregate - so make Korean friends and party...

Sungbuk is not that great (depends where you live, though).

Bundang is awesome (but boring for young singles).

bundang is great if you're looking for a polished, planned community with every convenience, including western chains and ammenites. its just a bit of a hike from the livelier, dicier areas that make seoul fun for single guys. i think the appeal of sungbuk-gu has been made clear. you've got everything that's appealing about northern seoul within reach, but you can also escape into neighborhoods that are anything but westernized.

just remember, a lot of hogwons in sungbuk like to house their teachers up in nowon-gu, which has its own appeal, but is just a lot further from the action. any info from your employer on where you might be landing?

On another note, Sungbuk is a pretty massive "Gu," covering many areas that differ.

very true. i guess you could get stuck in a corner that's a little less than ideal.

i just got here recently and am living by miasamgeori station. it's pretty nice, but as has been mentioned, rather residential. i've seen three other foreigners in the area in four days (aside from my coworkers). it's a quick ride to better areas though. i'll have to check out hyehwa though. any places in particular in hyehwa you recommend?

donam-dong is right by sungshin women's univ. station on the 4 line. lots of restaurants, coffee shops, etc. it's also a quick bus ride or two stops on the subway to hyhewa. not a bad place to be at all.

You have everything in Hyehwa without the massive crowds, though the crowds are around.

Walk around, see for yourself. Daehangno and the off streets are full of regular, popular and trendy places to eat and drink. Daehangno is the main street running from the Hyehwa Rotary/Rooundabout to Iwha Junction south of Hyehwa. There are also loads of musicals and performance theaters on the East side of Daehangno from Exit 1 to Exit 2 and around. On the West side off Daehangno, from Exit 4 to 3, you find more authentic Korean places. Head toward Sungkungkwan University and explore the alleys to the West for cheaper, grungy and local spots. For food, you never run out of options, especially on Daehangno.

check out this thread for a huge addition to sungbuk-gu. it's really close to donam-dong too! two subway stops on line 4 or any number of buses go right there.
