Hey Demo. I'm officially trying Vista 64. Looks good so far. Not as slow as I expected. However, I am having some...glitches. Corrupt C: drive complaints and problems with updates being foremost. It also deleted my Firefox installation 2x! What the heck!
But I'm giving it a chance. I may become a fanatic yet?
BTW- I have it installed dual with my XP. My XP is giving me a corrupt C: now, too. ??? Nothing bad seems to be coming of it, though. |
My install went smooth as silk. What build/torrent did you use? I'm running the newest version of Firefox x64 called "minefield" pretty quick...pages just fly down.

For those of you who dual-boot or know of dual-booting...
What kind of partition should I install Vista on, if I already have XP installed on c: ? The options are ACTIVE, PRIMARY, or LOGICAL (maybe another...)
Currently, I have installed Vista on a PRIMARY partition, so every time I boot either Vista or XP becomes c: Is this making things get corrupted? If so, what kind of partition should I install Vista on?
Cheers. |

Primary.
I have read that Vista needs to go on first followed by XP. Not sure if that's the case or not. |

That site looks sweet. Lots of good 64bit stuff. I'll definitely give that firefox a shot.
@mrsquirrel. Now it's working again. Let's hope it stays uncorrupted.
On a positive note...it's really REALLY pretty. Watching movies is really snazzy with the translucent border. |

Maybe you should tell the OP.
He started this thread asking for advice and I was kind enough to give him my opinion, rather than just rolling my eyes and telling him to use the search function.
But hey, if that's your way.
What a friendly forum you make it seem......... |
I think it was aimed more at the fact that there are already 3 threads regarding vista on the first page. The pros/cons of vista has been discussed in depth |
In that case he should have quoted the OP, 15 posts before mine, I think it was just a crude snipe.
This thread has been very useful it seems, even though Demophobe's first post was a rolleyes, his 3rd another rolleyes and the 4th a post of a someone poking a finger in someones eye.
I hope the OP got something from this thread, rather than being told to use the search function.
I'm glad I could at least put an opinion forward, and people are having a chance to learn about using VISTA for the first time . |

There's a hack for Crysis that makes it work on DX9? Oh, that's funny. |
You should learn to read before you post.

Sorry to interrupt your flame war
My computer took a massive nosedive last night with corrupted c: (active partition) files. It was barely starting up for awhile.
So I changed my Vista partition from a PRIMARY to a LOGICAL drive. Now everything seems to be working without any corrupt files. It's still able to boot up as the active drive (surprisingly). I think the computer didn't like having 2 primary partitions (though only one active at the time and Acronis had no problems giving them to me!). Always learning with these boxes.
BTW- I'm not too sure what you guys were going on about with Crysis...but I've been playing the demo on XP with no problems. |

That was aimed at bassexpander as he doubted the existance of the simple hack to change XP Dx9 into dx10 for crysis with out the hassle of buying VISTA.
Excellent read for the OP there, that wasn't so hard to post was it? Better than rolling of eyes!! |

We weren't talking about crysis, that was bassexpander who was confused that you can play crysis on XP with all the Dx10 effects that VISTA has with a simple hack. (Even though there isn't really much difference considering all the hype about Dx10 before it came out.)
But, I'm glad you have sorted out your problems with VISTA. |

People are still trashing Vista!!!??
That's like getting sent a link to the Star Wars boy video by someone who has only just seen it.
Vista was released 1 year and 3 months ago.
Millions of people are happily using it. I bet there are millions of non-tech people who bought a new PC in the past year and didn't even realize that the OS had changed from XP to Vista.
The people who say Vista sucks are those who want it to do what it hasn't been designed to do.
Happy Vista user here. 1 year down the road and still happy. |

For a new user, it might feel ok using vista...because they don't know any better.
However, for someone who is used to a hackable system, Vista sucks arse.
Here's an analogy...Having a really hot, easygoing girlfriend who will do anything with you. Then she becomes a vegan hypochondriac, buys a sexy black dress, and won't do anything kinky anymore.
weird analogy, but sums up my experience moving from XP to Vista. |

...any OS that you have to hack to make work properly is no good in my books. |
So, let me get this straight...
You like to/don't like to "hack" your OS, which you can do well with XP, but you don't like an OS that has to be hacked to "work properly", which I assume means Vista.
So, this begs the question; why do you "hack" XP if it is just.so.good.?
Meh...I think I am sorry to say this, but only because it is you, a poster I do have respect for, but it is quite clear that you perhaps haven't done your Vista homework, don't have the same patience with Vista that you probably had for XP when it first came out (don't tell me XP 'just worked' for you out of the box) or are in a comfort zone and can't be bothered to learn a few new things.
Take your pick, but none of them seem to be faults of Vista.
What would be the point of releasing an OS that was essentially the same as XP? XP has (had) many problems, glaring ones, in fact, but folks have become so used to the workarounds that they just don't see it for what it is (was). Also, XP has 3 service packs out and, if memory serves us, XP was accused and blamed for the self same evils Vista is being slammed.
Well, I for one expect things in tech to advance, not stay the same. Seems to be the point of the industry, no? A very Vista-capable computer is cheaper now than an XP-capable one was back in 2000, so that is not an argument.
Ugh...same old, ad nauseum. Vista rocks, even un-service-packed. |
