I am looking to replace (only cuz I am bored) my Ubuntu media/torrent server with a OSX86 machine. The machine I run now is and OLD piece of sh!t....and old 1.6GHz P4. I have 4 500GB drives in it....the cooling system is so crap i had to take the case off and tie a fan on the side blowing directly on the drives!!

I won't need to play games or run programs on it.....It's basically going to sit in the closet and do its thing. I'll connect to it via remote desktop (as I do now)

Anyways, my problem is not installing the OS or setting things up, I can do all of that....but to be honest, I don't have a clue about building a machine.

I need to build a machine out of compatible parts (listed here). So, can anyone help me pick some decent components that will all work together?? I want to install the Kalyway 10.5.1 image (EFI/Vanilla kernel working = YES and Fully Working w/o Patch = YES).

Like I said, I don't need to have a super fast machine, just a cheap, solid machine that will do its job.

Thanks guys.

Since it will just sit in the closet and you don't need audio

mainboard - gigabyte GA-P35-DS3
CPU - intel core2duo of your choice (up to and including a quad-Q6600)
on board LAN
RAM of your choice and quantity - make sure you get matched pairs of chips for dual channel capability
6 SATA sockets (SATA 1,2,3 capable) and 1 IDE cable (you can put 7 drives and your DVD-ROM on it.
VIDEO- Zotac GeForce 7300GT 256MB Working out of the box
pick a case of your choice for cooling

* Install method: Kalyway 10.5.1
* BIOS version unknown, Rev. 2.0
* Audio works with alc889a kexts (front and back)
* LAN and FIREWIRE working out of the box
* Both SATA and IDE working out of the box

EFI v8 + Vanilla kernel working
Audio needs patching

Everything is available in Korea. make a trip to your favorite parts store or pop into Son-in plaza by Yongsan station and get it make up for you.

I love how you basically said everything is his choice except the mobo and gpu and he is super pumped about your advice. (Yeah I know you listed what he'd need to patch and stuff, but still kinda funny.)

Funny indeed....Those are really the only things that matter as far as I know. I can just get the dude at Yongsan to fill in the rest.

Ohh, and thanks for your help!!

Thanks again for the help ttompatz!!!

Everything works perfectly.....Video, sound, LAN, reboot, power off.

I went with the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3, Sigma GeForce 7300GS, Intel Core2Duo E4500 (2.2GHz), 2GB ram, 550watt PSU. Got all the goods to build the machine for 390,000won.

how is the hackintosh working out? are you running 10.5.2 on it? i have a macbook pro, but would like to build something along the lines of what you had made.

if everything is working well, could you post more information about where you had it done?

thanks.

I bought all the parts at Yongsan and then followed this guide here or here.

I installed the Kalyway 10.5.1 release and updated to 10.5.2. I used the first guide, but i think the second is the same. I had to use a different video kext - my system wouldn't boot. I think it was the NVinject that i used.

All seems to be working fine except when I boot it up, it takes 2 minutes or so. I've read this is from the NVInject, but im not sure. I don't really care as it rarely ever gets turned off - its basically just a media server. Hooked it up to my tv and it plays 8GB MKV's fine with the optical connected to my surround sound receiver.

Pretty happy with it. It was fairly cheap and everything works just as I wanted it to. I just ran XBench and get an overall score of 171 on it.

great!

i'd be using it only as a download machine / media center for my tv, too. good to know that it has no problems (i don't care about the 2 minute boot time either).

thanks for the answer.

Given up on Spliff's machine for the time being. The guide for installing on a Dell E520 is two pages long and is taking the piss really.

Not sure of the compatibility of a pentium 4 D 3.2 as well.

I think for the most part you need to build the machine to fit the OS in this case. It can be made to work on a wide variety of machines, but with a tweak here and there. If you are building a machine it makes sense to buy the components that are known to work 100%.....I didn't know exactly what I was doing, that's why I bought the components I did hoping minimize frustration!! Smile

Like I said, I am very happy with my machine. It seems to work perfectly. But I'm a little hesitant to install this last 10.5.2 kernel patch as I don't know exactly which one to use. I don't want to *beep* up what is working perfectly at the moment.
