if your motherboard is not intel & your cpu supports ss3, use the patched kernal ( second option ). the first one is the original kernal for similar apple hardware (intel mobo/cpu). |

Cheers for that. Just installed it and it works perfectly. The system boots in about 20 seconds.
Awesome.....a $400 Mac. Everything works perfectly now and have zero complaints. |

I think for the most part you need to build the machine to fit the OS in this case. It can be made to work on a wide variety of machines, but with a tweak here and there. If you are building a machine it makes sense to buy the components that are known to work 100%.....I didn't know exactly what I was doing, that's why I bought the components I did hoping minimize frustration!! 
Like I said, I am very happy with my machine. It seems to work perfectly. But I'm a little hesitant to install this last 10.5.2 kernel patch as I don't know exactly which one to use. I don't want to *beep* up what is working perfectly at the moment. |
I can't even get it to the install screen. Not a happy bunny. Disks work ok on my Thinkpad and the reading I've done on Dell's doesn't make it look good. Would appear that some of them are nearly designed for osx and others need to have it beaten into them.

Actually....There is just one thing that i have noticed that doesn't work - the cpu/hard drive temperature monitor.
So, I installed 'Temperature Monitor' and I read that if you have a certain class of processor (processor/motherboard???, can't remember exactly) it will read 15 degrees or so hot.
My processor is reading 50~55 degrees with just Transmission running (idle basically). I was getting a bit worried, but i just noticed that it says my hard drive is reading 40 degrees!! That is nearly impossible....I have two big fans running for the case alone.
It must be reading 15 degrees too hot. A drive around 25 degrees seems pretty normal to me.
What d'ya think?? |

IDE - just came across a whole set of posts on the problems of IDE drives. Hadn't looked deep enough before then.
I swear the optical drive in my notebook is IDE but maybe not. It installed Leopard ok. |

when you boot up, go into the bios and find the PC Health section. you can check the temperature of the cpu/motherboard there. are you using the stock cooler that came with the CPU? |

I had a similar problem when trying to install on a MOBO with the ICH8 southbridge chipset. try using an IDE to SATA convertor or buy a SATA DVD drive. I did the latter and bought a DL burner for 30,000 won. since then, all the install discs loaded fine on SATA port 1~4 with the HD being connected to port 1 or 2. |

Bios says 40 degrees.....rebooted after running basically at idle.
Seems pretty hot. The bios said that the CPU fan was running at 550rpm. Is that slow??? Sounds kinda slow.
My MacBook is always running around 45 ~ 55 degrees, but I am thinking that the same is a little high for my server but I don't know much about the hardware side of things.
I have iStatMenus installed on the server and it can read (if its true) the hard drive temperatures. They are reading around 40 degrees. If the thing about 15 degrees is true, that puts them at 25 which is perfect.
I'm starting to think that my machine is running really hot even with two big case fans. I'm not dual booting on it, so i can't check the temps in another OS. |

They normally have temp monitors - I know the SuSE one does. |

do you have the CPU Smart FAN Mode turned on? or enabled the intel(T) QST fan management option?
my zalman fan was running around 750 rpm before i turned on the intel(R) QST option. now it's running at twice the speed.

which model of the e4400 do you have? if the sSpecNumber is SLA98 the max temp is 73.3�C. if its SLA3F the max temp is 61.4�C. I would be a little concerned if you had the latter.
the core temperature should be 10-15�C higher than the CPU temperature. temperature monitor only shows the core temperatures and not the overall CPU readings.
so you should be fine.
a good way to check load temps is by using handbrake and decode a dvd to xvid or mp4. |

How do I find out which model I have??? Just tossed the box out the other day ;(
When I get home tonight, I will look around in the system details to see if the model# is listed there, and see what the fans are set at.

EDIT: Well, my box is definitely gone. I tried to have a peek at the processor but its covered in paste. I don't have any extra so I can't clean it off to read the sSpec Number.
So, I guess its just wait and hope it doesn't cook itself until I can get to Yongsan to buy some Zalman products and some heatsink paste.

Just noticed you looked up the specs for the E4400. I have the E4500 I found that webpage you refered to and its says max temperature is 73.3�C.
There is no option in the bios for the Intel QST fan control. Its either on or off (even after updating the bios to the latest version). I turned it off to let the fan run at full speed. At idle (just Transmission running) is hovering right around 46~47�C. Seems like its as cool as it going to get!!
I'll still look into a Zalman CPU cooler when i get the chance to go to Yongsan.
EDIT: Ok, after some advanced testing involving transcoding a video file while running the mouse back and forth over the task bar to max out both cores, the temperature of both cores reached 65�C, but never went over that. Oh, and I had changed the bios setting back to automatically control the fans.
Sounds fuckin' hot, but as long as it doesn't go over that i guess I'm good to go.

 , my mistake. sorry to raise your blood pressure.
i have the q6600 with a zalman cnps9500-at and my core temps are around 40 at idle. subtract the 10-15 degrees for the CPU temp. way better than my p4 3.2 with idle CPU temps around 45.
have you tried a full load test? |
