My co-teacher has told me we have to attend some GEPIK meeting tomorrow in Suwon from 3-5pm.

We have to go, no wriggling out of this one. I don't even know what it's about, but we must go. Embarassed

You never have to go. I'm sure there are over 100 teachers in GEPIK who know nothing about this meeting and will not be there.

Do tell? I haven't heard anything about it and I am with GEPIK.

Perhaps I will hear about it at 2:30 tomorrow. Cool

Yeah, my Co-teacher has to go too, which means afternoon classes are canceled. So far I'm looking at half of my classes this week being canceled!

My handler is not my co-teacher at all, hence this program would be absolutely irrelevant. Luckily my school gives teachers so much busy work, they don't have time for silly little GEPIK trips.

Aren't afternoon classes specialized? The Korean teachers aren't required to be there, right? Uhh...cuz I still teach my afternoon classes..ct or no ct. I cry sometimes (lol jk)....my new schedule contains mostly afternoon classes.

^

The students had to sit in their homeroom with a substitute teacher for "self-study," which didn't make a whole of sense to me since I could've taught them, but I go with the flow.

I feel ya, afternoon classes can be like pulling teeth sometimes--especially around 2 or 3:00!

heck yea..my classes start after lunchee (130) and go straight til 430. I really don't like the new schedule and have told the head teacher that the kids can't seem to concentrate past noon. He didn't give a damn.

He even put the grade 3 boys and grade 4 boys together. So, I have one class all boys and one class all girls. The girls are awesome and I can get so much work done with them. The boys...seriously..I almost cried one day.

Oh I forgot to mention that the last time my "charger" came back from one of these things, he told me that they were told that their foreigners should be made to work as much as possible, because we are being paid so much and we need to earn our salaries. This means teaching a minimum of 22 hours a week, mandatory OT teaching volunteer students and teachers' classes, and having as little vacation as possible--only the minimum set forth in the contract.

So it seems that these "workshops" / teacher training sessions are designed to teach the handlers how to squeeze every hour / won out of their FT. I hope I'm wrong, but that's really the impression I get. So I expect that soon this board will be inundated with GEPIK complaints of some undesirable changes at their schools.

Shocked Shocked
and then they wonder why FTs and their co-teachers don't get along, and therefore have trouble teaching together-- they're being taught to give us a hard time, and to almost distrust us.
although i don't think my co-teacher has been to one for quite some time, i had 20hrs/wk last year and now 18hrs/wk or 17hrs/wk this year.

has anyone in a public school ever had to do mandatory OT?

^ No.

But they did ask nicely and smiled when asking if I could do it this year. but it was one of those smiles that said if you say no i'm going to ask you again in 30s and keep asking and look disappointed until you say yes.

I know exactly what you mean. It's a very plaintive, look full of yearning. This year I was asked, but I declined as supplementary classes -- at least for English conversation -- are being offered to me only on the first and third Saturdays of each month instead of during the week.
