Hi Mods.

I just noticed that my post about another anti-canal march in Seoul this month has been moved from the general discussion forum to the current events forum.

Now that post, directly related to what will probably be the most destructive and wasteful "development" in Korea in a generation is wedged between posts about John McCain getting angry with reporters and some Sudanese guy being forced to marry a goat. Confused

What exactly is the reason for the post being moved? The simple answer is probably that you've found reading about the grand canal a bit tiresome or repetitive, or that you think I've started too many posts about it.

That's fair enough. I'm actually trying to wean myself off daves a little bit myself these days. For that reason I gave up replying to responses on the Campus Crusade for Christ thread I started and have not replied to others related to it. I don't regret starting that thread, but I was more than a little bit facetious and offensive in my first post and for that I apologize. I'm going to stick to only starting or responding to threads in which I can make a worthwhile and relevant contribution and I promise not to start any threads that are simply shit-stirring.

But going back to the issue of the grand canal protest thread's removal, doesn't this issue have some revelance to our time in Korea? There's far far too much sniping and cynicism, and far too many inane and immature posts, on this forum. Everyone complains about the state of Korea's natural environment for example, so surely a thread saying "let's go out and help protect Korea rather than just bitch about it" has a place on the general discussion forum.

Cheers,

Duncan

Sometimes the moderators are not moderate.

I really do not know why it would make a difference if a current event were discussed in the General Discussion Forum instead of the Current Events forum, sometimes a Current Event may be more suitable to a General Discussion.

Maybe the OP was looking for a tone of discussion that is found in the General forum as opposed to the tone found in the CE forum?

Just an opinion.

He's not "some Sudanese guy". His name is Mr. Tombe! Evil or Very Mad

But I see your point, Duncan. Why must the general forum only be about whether or not to bring deodorant to Korea and if we think Korean women are hot.

Your posts regarding the canal project do raise an issue that affects expats living in Korea, at least those of us who will probably be here for some time to come.

If I were to hazard a guess:

The topic was more in a political vein than a "living in Korea" discussion. Really, not too many of us will be affected by the grand canal plan. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that none of us will be affected by it unless it runs through someone's hagwon.

I'm one of the first to sweep in and say that a post here is 'off-topic' - but when it comes to news in korea, and how it relates to us living here, I thik it should be able to stay in this forum.

Then there's the other view of "So the *beep* what?"

Yeah, the CE forum can be the "Daily Crackpot Rant" most of the time, but the thread is still available and there's no law that says the CE forum has to be left in the hands pf the crackpots.

Well, it is a current event, isn't it? It's not as if the mods deleted your thread or anything. I didn't realize having a thread moved to CE had negative connotations. (Does it? Confused )

In any case, the planned project is definitely worth discussing and I appreciate your having brought it to our attention. Unfortunately I haven't added much to the discussions because I've been busy with other things and haven't had a chance to research the canal issue in depth, but I have read your comments and some of the articles you've posted (well, the ones in English). It does sound pretty disturbing from what I've read so far, and I hope you'll continue to keep us updated. CE hasn't had much to offer lately, but articles about interesting topics like this one will hopefully make it a more useful, relevant forum.

The CE forum is filled with nuts. ALmost no one goes there, and even if they did, it wouldn't be the same kind of discussion. It should have stayed here, as it will affect us, if not by bringing the economy down Smile

It would seem to me that a Current Event on a topic about Korea
specifically would fit in both the CE and the GD forums, where as an
international current event may not.

Think about how many topics in the Job Related could actually be a
current event also.

It not about dictating what belongs in a certain forum it's more about
moderating the extreme elements.

Well, mod decisions are always a mystery to me, and so is the whole issue of what is or isn't appropriate for which forum and why blatant TOS violations are so often allowed to stand.

Kiwiduncan, I just took another look at your thread and it occurred to me that if you wanted it to stand out you could have come up with a better subject heading. "Another month, another protest" is easy to miss ... it could also be read as suggesting that this is a silly protest over some trivial issue that we Dave's types don't need to worry about. Since that obviously wasn't your intention, I think the heading is kind of misleading.

I hope the discussion will continue, even if people do have a grudge against the forum for whatever reason ... it's an interesting topic and I'd like to read more about it.

it's related to Korea, so it should be in the general forum.

I was very upset the child abuse thread was removed from the general discussion board to the off topic forum, a forum which far less of us use. By being active inthe general discussion forum it could have helped more cases be reported. And yes, I did PM the mods about it.

Since canals can be used to transport people and goods, you're lucky your thread didn't end up in the Travel Forum, which sees traffic once a week if it's lucky. Very Happy

They shouldn't be.

Basically, some things that might damage the income potential of this site, or get it blocked, may result in a deleted or moved post.
