School went bankrupt? You were not paid? Welcome to life. Suck it up and move on. |

I had the same experense as you with a hagwon going bust.
I was told by my prosecutor that if a hogwan goes bust before they pay you. There is nothing they can do for you, so you lose the money. Or you can use your own money to pay for a lawyer. |

You could go to Labor and get a judgment against him for the unpaid salary. You'd likely have to take that to court to have it enforced, however. The guy probably wasn't incorporated, which means he's personally liable for his business debts. Therefore, you can seek an attachment on his personal property (bank accounts, real estate, etc.) to satisfy the judgment against him.
All that being said, if you're only out 1 month's salary (quite possibly less than 2 million won after all is said and done), this might not be worth your time and effort. It's your call, of course. If you want to pursue the matter, that's your path: labor, then small claims court. |

Call labor (1350 extension 7) for assistance and location of the nearest office and then go file a claim. |

Here's the number for an English-speaking lawyer that has a Labor Law Firm in Seoul: 019-489-2179. His name is Bong-soo Jung. His office is in the building directly above the Seollong subway station.
Keep us updated! And don't let anyone tell you to just "suck it up and move on". Too many people do that here, which is what the hogwan owners are counting on.
Give Bong-soo a call and either explain your situation, or set-up a meeting. He'll be upfront with you about your chances of winning. |

Do you know where the owner lives?
I think I'd go pay him/her a visit. |

The hagwon owner could have simply closed down the school and moved to another location. How do we know the hagwon owner didn't go bust and instead moved to another location. Even so, unpaid wages should be resolved somehow by the labor board. I don't imagine the official line from labor or immigration is you're SOL. Do what Ttompatz says: call Labor.
Labor, immigration, and foreigner translation hotline numbers were the first numbers I learned when I got to Korea. They've vital to keep you legal, paid, and less stressed.
(Apparently, the other common word that can typically replace the first word in this phrase -- "Close the door" -- is censored by the foul language filter on this forum. Intressant) |

Huh. Reality is a waste of time. Ok. Go get a lawyer. Waste your $$ and he'll tell you the same thing. That's why it's caled going bankrupt. |

He should still call Labor. No harm in calling and filing a formal complaint. |
