Purrrrfect:

I know a Canadian instructor in Daegu and I know an english speaking korean guy from Incheon. I think both of those are too far away from you. You could do it on Jeju Do. Big Blue has an english instructor. If you're still interested, PM me.

I haven't travelled much here. I'm so tired on the weekend I just can't get motivated to get out of incheon/seoul. Plus the traffic jams and heaps of people have put me off.

In my 2 years here I have been so many places. i live in the south so don't have to worry about the traffic of the Seoulites.
The highlights are
*Jeju 2 times - done it all so i wouldn't go back but its not like Korea, especially in the low season.
* Jirisan - a 42 kilometre three day hike from sea level to 2000 metres. Awesome experience and one of the best hikes I've ever done.
* Gyeongju maybe 4 times.
*Bogildo- This island of the south coast where nobody speaks Korean but everyone is so friendly as no English people go there. stayed 3 nights in the one yeogwas there(on the floor), The beach was awesome and I met some good uni students and we got trashed together. The best holiday i had here.
*Many temples- best 4 are
1.Heinsa- with the tripataka, really nice
2.sangyessa- Set at the foot of Jirisan, got drunk on dong dond ju in the middle of a stream on a hot summers day. Great fun
3.Bulguksa - of course, too crowded though
4.Tongdasa - the trippy ass trees on the 1 kilometre walk between the car park and the temple are cool
*Many other mountain hikes which are beautiful i their own way especailly Wolchusan, maisan, and the one near Wonju(the name slips me mind)

I've done many other trips to Busan, Koje, Cheonan(the Independance Museum), Gwangju, Buyeo, daegu, Daejeon, pohang.
The place i really want to go to now Seoraksan, i haer its awesome. I loke travelling here and I've met some great people, plus I also am a alcoholic and young. There is no excuse Very Happy
BTW...Lonely planet for Korea sucks. Outside of Seoul it is hopeless

I was the super tourist for about the first 6 months I was in Korea and covered a lot of ground. Some of my favorites are:

1. Jeju-do...rented a bike and rode around the island. My favorite Korea experience.

2. Songnisan national park...beautiful, especially in cherry blossom season.

3. Gyeongju...definitely go at least once.

4. Buyeo, a great day trip...very relaxing and quiet. Gonju was pretty similar and also a good time.

5. Independance Hall in Cheonan...went 3 times which almost made me crazy but once was enjoyable!

6. The mud festival at Daechon Beach.

7. Gwaneoksan, just outside of Cheonan.

8. I went to some Maritime Museum outside of Cheonan on a field trip with my school which was really cool. Don't remember the name or any details but I'm sure Koreans would know what you're talking about.

9. Gyerongsan National Park....did it in winter and in a blizzard. I couldn't walk for the next few days but it was enjoyable. Two beautiful temples, waterfalls.

10. The Icheon ceramics village...much cheaper than Seoul and the other tourist areas. Bargaining is strongly advised and saved 20-30% off the sticker price. Learn your Korean numbers...no one really speaks English.

Just because....why do you think the LP sucks outside of Seoul. I thought it was great...it covered the highlights.

My problem with it is this. It is so full of holes. My home city of Changwon doesn't even get a mention(but there is nothing here I suppose) and just too breif to be useful. It doesn't suck, just I find it is better to go to the info desk at the bus station and just find out stuff there.

I had one bad experience with it. I went to wando and looked for the ferry terminal to Bogildo. it said in the middel of the city, so i am wanderibng around for a good 30 minutes. i show some Koreans but they just look at me strangely, I eventaully get told that it is 10 kilometres outside the city and was built 5 years ago. fat lot of good the Lonely Planet did then. Smile

I don't travel to neat places in Korea enough.
If I do--- TRAIN!!
If I travel once a month it is 100,000 won max for two return tickets for my wife and I.
Trains don't get stuck in traffic. It is nice to know your arrival time. Of course trains don't go to remote locations, but they get you close (it's Korea).
I don't want a car. I live in the city so buses and subways do me fine. When I get out I don't want to pay for gas and toll booths on top of the monthly car payment.

I find regardless of travel time getting away is relaxing.

On the train the long trip is time to sit and be bored and think. Once I get somewhere mountain air or beach sun is a nice relief from city noise.

Train travel is the best in any country, especially in Korea with the horrendous traffic. Always feels more "romantic", methinks.

A good way to avoid horrendous traffic: travel in your own province and avoid the highway. Anywhere out of province, take the train. Saemaul is best. You can get one of those ticket reservation card thingies where you ring up the number, give your name and passnumber, and boom, you reserve a seat. Beats the sometimes-horrendous queues at the train station.

I had a great trip to a temple near Suncheon a few weeks ago- "Song-gwang-sa" I think is the spelling. We just turned up and asked the monks if we could sleep over, no need to book, no charge, wake up with the monks at 3am and follow the pattern of their day.

I've been looking into doing something similar closer to Seoul, and see a few travel companies putting on trips. They're charging something like 55,000 won not including travel. So I was wondering what the deal is with just turning up at other temples and sleeping there? I don't want to line the pockets of some travel company who are just pointing at the door to the temple and giving me a souvenir brochure to take home, but obviously I'm not just going to turn up and assume they'll put me up out of the goodness of their hearts.

Any thoughts?

I hardly leave the city I live in. Often think about sightseeing, but never do.
