Anyone here ever teach at KAIST - not sure of the program but an English teaching position is currently advertised at TESOL website for KAIST.

What's Daejong like as a place to live?

Someone here recently wrote that KAIST doesn't recognized Master's degrees obtained at distance and that's all I've heard about the place, really.

Daejong, though, from what I've read sounds like a dud of a place to live. Dull and sanitized.

I live in Daejeon, and it is a nice city. As for Kaist, I have heard that you need a PhD to get a job there. But I could have been misinformed.

i know a teacher at KAIST who only has a master's...he loves it there...

The main KAIST campus is one of the top 5 in Korea, are they not?

KAIST is excellent! I spent a fair amount of time around there with friends' who were lecturing there. Of course, it depends on which program you are teaching in. You might need a Master's in TESOL. Daejeon is a fine city. The Palomeno bar is the bomb. Give my regards to Jimmy Lee!

All reports here on this thread are good so far on life in Daejong!

Was invited for an interview in New York where they're at a conference this week. Can't go but might do a telephone interview.

However, concerns about living in Daejong, which I've heard pretty much sucks.

I taught some conversation classes part-time at KAIST back in '99. It was a good place to work at then. Can't say what it is like now.

In my opinion, Daejon is one of the better cities in Korea to live and work in, in particular the northern part of the city where KAIST is. It's more open and greener than most cities. Outside of Seoul, all the cities have limited access to Western stuff, and even Seoul lacks.

From what I've heard as long as you don't work in a Hagwon in Daejeon you'll be absolutely fine.

I lived in Daejeon for 3 years 2004 to end of 2006. It's a pretty sweet place. Although, it depends what you are into. If you are young, unmarried, no kids, and don't want to get caught up in a smaller social scene, then Seoul is definitely better. If you just want to cruise, make some nice local (foreign and Korean) friends, and not be fused with any hustle and bustle, then Daejeon is a pretty good choice.

Also, my mate works at KAIST. He has an MA TESOL, and works around 16 hours a week I think. He has a fair bit of preparation and marking to do, but seems to really like it as TESOL is his thing. He travels for 5 and a half months a year and has housing on campus which isn't too bad.

Don't worry OP. You can work privates there and not worry. There are people looking out for you
