|
|
Probably not the politest question , but I was asked the other day as to how much I earned . After mentioning I earn about 2.2 m my co -teacher was shocked . "So little ?", she asked me .
Can anyone tell me how much the Koreans government school teachers earn ? I'd just like to be able to place myself in the grand scheme of things . |

The only one that I'm sure about is at my elementary.
One homeroom teacher who's been a teacher for a year gets 2 million. My co-teacher/another home room teacher/mother with two kids get's paid 2.2 million. We had a discussion about it. I thought it was best not to mention how much I get paid. |

depends on how many years they've been teaching. the just starting ones make similar amounts to 3rd level FTs. however, i believe korean teachers have a better pay scale than FTs (meaning if they top the scale they'll be doing way better than if we do) |

If you are in the public school system, the questions was answered already.
In a hakwon a teacher will make between 1.0 - 1.6 mil depending on experience, class load and subject areas.
Most Koreans have seen media reports and heard rumors of foreign teachers getting 35-50k won per hour (or more) and they do the math. 120 classes @50K would be much more than 2.2. |

Hmmm. Ok . Maybe she was just shocked because the media was making out that we make a killing. With out housing and flights etc then we actually make more, but then they teach less hours and are paid extra for all the evening/morning work. My housing is 600k. Good. Thanks for clearing that up. I can start looking down on people again . |

the Korean teachers I used to work at a hagwon with made about 1.7 without housing, worked more hours and never got overtime pay.
My coworkers at the university office make the same as me and work the same hours but generally have more work to do. |

its all done in relation to how many years they have been teaching. the more years they have and the more training they have acquired invariably means more pay.
But there are other factors that put our income levels above theirs. Like free housing, after school classes, pri <er hmm> vates, airfare reimbursement, bonuses, tax breaks (depending on where you are from) and workload. I believe they also get a bonus but I am not sure about this.
I feel there is a lot of resentment towards foreigner teachers and how much they earn, especially in regard to how much money filters out of the Korean economy back home. |

Even in the London Korean press there were stories of how much cash we earnt and sent back home.
Definitely a wise move mate. not as wise as Torres' movement at the san siro the other night but wise nonetheless

In 2001, grade school teachers just entering the workforce earned the equivalent to 27,092 US dollars, on average. When the teachers had 15 years of experience, that average jumped to 46,548 US dollars. Finally, the top salary for teachers in Korea averaged to be around 74,843 US dollars.

Koreans are under the impression that all English teachers make a killing here. Girls I have dated in the past have always been surprised at how little I make at PS. They thought I would earn at least 3 mil. But then, if you include the housing and flights, etc, I definitely do earn more than 3 mil.
Hakwon teachers don't make much, but PS teachers can earn quite a lot depending on how long they have been teaching. I heard our principal earns around 7 mil a month, maybe more. Our ex VP owns a $1m apartment, so they're definitely not doing too badly! |

ugh, i can't stand how korean principals are treated here and how much power they have in their schools. my old one was such a little tyrant and my new one i don't know much about (but he looks as if he likes the drink a little too much) |

A lot of public school teachers also have a 9-15 hour school day. |

That's the thing. Base salary might be the same , but they get paid 25 k an hour for those extra hours . Given that they make at least and extra mill. (probably a lot more) all and all . |
