It's very unusual to see intelligent coverage of these incidents in the media. For the first time in a long time, I'm impressed. I agree that the label "eco-terrorist" is idiotic and think the writer does a good job of explaining why.

Interesting opinion piece about the Earth Liberation Front

Ask yourself if "wow!" is an appropriate thread title for this (or any) thread dealing with this (or any) topic.

The author is a known conspiracy theorist. Hardly a objective or reputable source. Google and type in ted rall debunked. You will notice a number of misrepresentations and outright lies that he makes.

Well, I didn't notice any in this article. I was judging it on its own merits, and I think it's well-written and well-argued.

Bramble,

Maybe you object to calling ELF terrorists, but surely you recognize they are criminals. I mean, these people are far from revolutionaries. They are interfering with property rights and committing the very grossest kind of conversion.

I thought Tolkien treated the ELFs fairly in his story?

And don't they spike trees?
And burn down houses?
Through acid at people?

I thought this was an accurate portrayal.

ELF's goal of "inflict[ing] maximum economic damage on those profiting from the destruction and exploitation of the natural environment" has inspired people to set fire to SUVs at a New Mexico car dealership, Hummers in California, and a Vail ski lodge whose construction threatened the lynx, an endangered species. Damage to the Colorado ski project amounted to $12 million.

ELF members are vandals. They're arsonists. But they aren't terrorists.

Perhaps the most appropriate word to describe them is 'vigilantes', but until that becomes the accepted word, I'll continue to think of them as eco-terrorists. They are self-appointed 'vandals' who break the law and want to label their victims as the extremists. They are a pathetic bunch.

Thing is, in democratic nations that ascribe to the rule of law we have mechanisms in place to make social change without committing violent acts. That's what makes them pathetic.

Several of the more prominent activists have repudiated their own former methods and activities. Do a wiki search on Rod Coronado. I'll post a link later, but it's dinner time and galbi is calling in a sweet voice right in my ear ...

Cool

I had a brief career as an anti-eco-terrorist terrorist when reddog and and some skinny dude in a ratty t-shirt argued for burning cars. I set out to firebomb their apartments, but I failed to find them. I was disappointed.

And this is an opinion piece, not a news report.
