|
|
| Is there an application available so I can connect directly to another computer or peer and share files? Also, is it possible for me to gain access to my home PC from work so I can upload/download stuff? |

If you know how to use FTP, it is not hard to install FTP server software on your home PC and client software at work (or anywhere else you want to access your files from).
There is also a native command line FTP client built into windows.
If you have the pro version of XP you can also use windows remote access - but I have never used it so can't comment on how-to or the reliability of it.

Can you recommend any FTP software? Something at entry-level knowledge would be good. |

This one is Shareware, not hard to setup and easy to use. Free for 20 days.
The ability FTP server is also shareware (free for 30 days) and only $30 to buy. It is another easy to setup and use package.

If you want something a little more functional and broad based, then server software like SAMBAR has both WWW and FTP servers in one package. http://www.sambar.com/download.htm . |

| Do you need to use the 2 apps in tandem with each other, or are they used separately? |

They are different packages of the same type of software (FTP server). You only need one of them. Choose the one with the interface that you prefer.
You run the FTP server software on your home PC and FTP client software on any remote machine that you want to use to access your home computer. I did not provide a link for client software. |

cerberus is the FTP server. It will host/control/authorize all file transactions.
you could use any FTP client to connect to your server . with fireFTP addon(plugin), you don't need to install an actual FTP client application on the computer. install the plugin and choose the ftp option in the firefox menu. piece of cake. |

Actually, you don't need a plugin to use firefox as a FTP client.
Simply type in ftp://server.network.address/ and it will work just fine. |

you can do it that way, but fireFTP has the option of using SSL/TLS (same encryption used by online banking and shopping) security. +all the advanced features you wouldn't normally get. If your remotely accessing your home machine, the last thing you want is to be compromised. |
