This guy made a good point.

"Both Korean and Japanese cultures have a thing which basically can be reduced to "public opinion" and "private opinion". It's all about the concept of saving face as it pertains to the individual cultures. A public opinion is what a person says in the presence of aquaintences and strangers which mostly keeps the peace and avoids conflict. The private opinion is what they tell their friends and family members.
So in mixed company if a Korean tells you that you are hansome or beautiful respectively, its pretty much the equivalent of someone form our culture saying "It was nice to meet you."

Exactly.

When koreans say that oh you are so handsome,
you look like a sharon stone means hey it was nice to meet you.
maybe some koreans want to be closer to you to learn some english.
or their english might be not good enough more than saying you're beautiful, handsome. its extreme case. but some people do that.

These are westerners that koreans really consider handsome or pretty.

so if you are not good-looking like these people, you'd better take those compliment "it was nice to meet you or i want to be closer to you so that
i can learn some english from u, i just know a few english words such as pretty, handsome. so i tell u this"

I remember watching a korean interviewer with some brothers in the NBA who were doing a promotional tour or something over here. The interviewer said at some point "oh...you are much more handsome in real life than you are on tv"...cue WTF? look from the guy being interviewed, after a few seconds silence the interviewer gave him this really nerdy look and asked "so...what do you think about that?"

My student(freshman uni) told me I look like Kiera Knightley yesterday. I am a guy. I look absolutely nothing like Kiera Knightley. I have to give her points for originality.

Keira Knightley? I'm jealous.
I just get Disney characters. Today, it was Tinkerbell. Last week, it was Belle. I guess I don't look human enough to warrent a non-cartoon comparison.

The scary thing is that many people think when they get to Asia they do magically transform into beautiful people . Don't believe the hype folks .

Although I wouldn't go so far as to say it's always done with malicious agenda . Sometimes the agenda can just be making you feel good , no ?

Korean people often say that I look like Jane March, and strangely enough, I kinda do. I didn't know who she was at first, but after looking at her picture, I see a clear resemblance.

It's seriously not a tribute to Daniel Kim? He is pretty famous.

I'm often told by Koreans that I look like Jim Carrey. I thought they were crazy until I told some other people including friends back home and they agree and now I'm beginning to think so myself...

Yes I am told I look like Brad Pitt all the time.

I am most pleased with this realistic comparison.
