My Mother's wallet was stolen in America. She and I are on a joint bank account, which she cancelled as soon as she realized her wallet was missing. She overnighted me a form from the bank that I have to have notarized and sent back to the bank. This will open up the new bank account and finish the transfer of funds from the old to the new account.
Just before, my husband (Korean) and I went to a local law firm/notary service here in Anyang. The woman there said it would cost 130,000 Won for the document to be notarized. She said the basic rate was 70,000 Won and then she tacked on another 60,000 based on the amount of money being transferred between accounts (listed on the bank form). The process would entail writing up a letter with an explanation of what the document was and why I was having it notarized, and then they would attach this sheet to the form. They said they wouldn't do anything to the actual form itself. None of it sounded "right" to me.
In America, a notary basically just verifies your identification and signature and stamps the document after they've witnessed you signing it.
I'm in a time crunch here and won't have time to hike it up to the U.S. Embassy for at least a few days. (They only charge $30.)
**I'd appreciate any information on whether this law firm represents the typical Korean-style notary process. |
