| how much vacation do fellow newbies out there get? how do vacation days work anyway.... are 10 days and 14 days the same, meaning 2 weeks? |

They mean whatever is written into the contract.
In a hakwon 10 days usually means 10 working days but can mean 10 days including the weekends or 10 days scattered one here, one there.
14 days CAN mean 2 calendar weeks or in the case of a public school, 14 working days NOT including weekends or red days (national holidays) which works out to just about 3 calendar weeks.
Confirm it BEFORE you sign on the dotted line if the contract is ambiguous. |

Yep! I was off on Monday this week because it was the 58th anniversary of one of my middle schools, today I am off because it is the 54th anniversary of my other middle school. Difficult week! |

SMOE gives 21 vacation days, plus national holidays, plus opportunities for more vacation from teaching at camps and re-signing contracts. |

| so how likely is it to get more than 10 days off? and is anyone able to take 10 days together? where could i find a ps job in seoul at this time of the year? |

I don't know about PS jobs in Seoul but there are still lots in Gyeonggi province ( the province that surrounds Seoul city).
In a hakwon it is unlikely that you would get more than 10 days and very likely that you would not get the 10 that are in the contract. Most hakwons will give you a 5 consecutive day break when the school takes it's summer break and then you fight for the other 5 days and they are not likely to be together.
I have seen it commonly happen in hakwons that your 5 days would run Thurs, Fri, weekend, Mon, Tues, Wed. so you really end up with a short vacation for travel. (as compared to weekend, M,T,W,T,F, weekend).
Public schools are often more flexible as to specific dates and the WHEN you can apply and when you can take them are clearly outlined in the contract.

If you have X days of vacation on your contract, those days are paid vacation right (sorry, newbie question... lol)
Also, in Canada we have a two month break during the summer... Does such a break exist in the Korean school system? If so, how does it affect one's working hours and pay? |

Paid as in no deduction from salaried wages for not working those days = yes.
Paid as in "I took my vacation and worked 70 hours that month, do I still get overtime for those 10 hours?" NOT IN A HAKWON.
This doesn't occur at a public school because our holidays occur in the months when there are no classes.
Korean PUBLIC schools get 2 long breaks. End of the term/winter/spring break (end of Christmas until Feb. 1, then 2 weeks of classes then off Feb 15-Mar2.
The summer break runs from the end of July till the start of Sept.
How it affects your hours and work depends on where you work.
-In a hakwon it means EXTRA work EXTRA and classes during those times.
-In a public school it means day camps or dead time at your desk (doing class prep for the next year). |
