A Korean man who murdered his Vietnamese wife gets sentenced to only 12 years!

Yet the article says:

Quote:
A court sentenced a Korean man who killed his young Vietnamese wife with a relatively heavy punishment.

Relatively heavy punishment? HELL NO!

If 12 years is a "relatively heavy punishment" for murder than what would an average punishment for murder be?

It was a tortureous death. This man brutally beat his wife to death. She suffered a lot of pain.

Imagine the hell she was experiencing as she was getting pounded and pounded and pounded and pounded until her was gone. The massive pain. The helplessness. My god!

In fact, this was not the first time he abused his wife. He had a history of doing so. As the article says, the wife was suffering from so much abuse from her husband to the point that she decided to leave him and go back to Vietnam. But unfortunately she didn't make it out in time as he killer her before she could leave.

Just 12 years for murder! My god! It's totally outrageous!

Murderer of Vietnamese Wife Gets 12-Year Jail Sentence

March 13th, 2008
By Park Si-soo
Staff Reporter

A court sentenced a Korean man who killed his young Vietnamese wife with a relatively heavy punishment.

The Daejeon High Court Thursday sentenced the Korean identified as Jang to a 12-year prison term for murdering his 19-year-old Vietnamese bride last June.

The 47-year-old Korean first met his wife through a Korean matchmaking company in December in 2006 and married her in May last year.

Marriages with foreign nationals are prevalent in the rural areas of South Korea.

The Vietnamese woman, who suffered abuse at the hands of her husband and was impeded by a language barrier, decided to leave for her hometown on July 26, 2007, after one month of married life in Korea. But her intoxicated husband beat her to death.

In the ruling, the court said ``We saw the tragedy in which an older Korean male selected his wife in a matter of minutes then treated her like an imported product.''

It must be horrible in some parts of Vietnam. So horrible, in fact, that it would require someone to marry a Korean farmer and move to his farm.

Dear God, isn't that trading one hell for another one?

Yes, but they get their husband to send 100,000 won a month back home to their parents (the standard I believe).

12 years is a joke. Although I've heard of similar travesties of justice.

For example:

This guy got 18 months

It's a sick sick world we live in.

Guess it all depends on how good one's lawyer is.

That is indeed the question. The thread title is misleading. It makes it sound like a light sentence was given because the woman was foreign, rather than the relatively stiff sentence.

I agree that 12 years for murder is light. What is the typical sentence in Korea for this crime?

It's not that out-of-whack with American sentencing guidelines - assuming that it was considered a "crime of passion" without premeditation ...

Murder is generally considered in three categories: first, second, and third degree.A person convicted of first-degree murder gets a sentence of life in prison or execution. 'Murder One,' as it is commonly called, is premeditated, planned, and executed with some sort of particularly gruesome violence or other action.

Second-degree murder is premeditated but not extremely heinous or grisly in nature. This crime is typically punished with about 20 years in prison...

...A third-degree murder would be a heat of passion crime or a crime of provocation in which a reasonable person would be incited by the situation and act without consideration of the consequences.

(the quote is from an article in a college newspaper - the link was too long ...)

I was thinking the same. I mean we don't know what the sentence would be if she were Korean. I need to know how people get punished for killing Korean women. Anyway, this is horrible what happened to this lady...

Yeah, there are a lot of places where, if you factor parole into it, a murderer would probably end up serving about the same amount of time as this guy's sentence is. But I'm not sure what the parole guidelines are like in Korea. If this guy serves his full sentence, it might not be that out-of-whack with what he'd get in the west.

A lot of killers in NZ get let out before ten years. Recently the NZ maximum of 14 years was applied to a guy who killed one woman and seriously injured two others.

I have heard that some serial or multiple killers here get death penalty? So they should anyway.

I was wondering about this. I know Korea hasn't executed anyone for about 10 years but there are people on death row. I have this nagging thought running around my head that I saw where Korea finally banned capital punishment. Did I see that or just dream it?

Yet another reason I'll soon be waving Korea goodbye: the good ol' double standards vis-a-vis foreigners in nearly all legal matters.

Should cause igotthisguitar to pause, eh?
