Hey everyone...

New to the forums, but I'm looking to teach in Korea at some point in the next two years or so...

Using the search function the posts I found on Footprints were a few years old... So my question - has anyone used them recently? I know a few of you out there have had really bad experiences with recruiters in the past and I want to make sure I pick a "quasi-winner" before sticking a year of my line on a contract...

Hey, for some stupid reason this site won't let me PM you. Anyhow, I'm going to Korea in about five weeks with Footprints. So far, they have been absolutely AWESOME. And from what I've seen on other sites, the good experiences far outweigh the bad ones.

But in any case, I should have more information for you in a little over a month, if you're still interested . . .

Just generally, or with a specific aspect of the process? (answering emails, contracts, flights, etc?)

Their initial email response was quick, but it took over a month to actually talk to someone from Footprints on the phone. I gave up... and had a job through a different recruiter within 24 hours.

Who did you go with? Would you recommend them overall?

For my present position I used
http://uni.nayana.com/~getscenter/aboutus.htm
because I could not only pick the city, but also my actual school. I knew where I wanted to go because I'd been here in Korea for two years. No other EPIC (or GPICK, or SMOE) recruiter of which I'm aware, allows you to do this. However, GETSCenter only recruits for public school positions in Gyeongsangnam-do province. If you want to work somewhere else, you'll have to use a different recruiter.

Remember, with ALL recruiters - they don't work for you! Their main objective is to place you (somewhere)... and collect their money. Wink

As ttompatz says;

Recruiters are NOT a bad idea in and of themselves.

The problems arise when some newbie thinks a recruiter is something they are not.

Please let me repeat an old post of mine.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Really, when it comes to a recruiter, who cares?

A recruiter is nothing more than an introduction to an employer.

REPEAT: A recruiter is nothing more than an introduction to an employer.

Hello Mr. English speaker this is Mr Hakwon owner.
Mr. hakwon owner, this is Mr. English speaker.
Mr. English speaker, here is the contract. Please read and sign.
School, here is the signed contract. Pay me.
Good bye.

-You are not paying them anything (or you shouldn't be).
-THEY DO NOT WORK FOR YOU! - They work for the school.
-They owe you nothing once you get here.
-They are not your friend.
-They are not your baby sitter.
-They cannot help you if things go to *beep* after you get here.

Beyond that it is YOUR responsibility to check the school out.

Do NOT trust ANY recruiter. They are like used car salesmen. They will lie and sell their soul to get the signature on the contract.

Do your own DUE DILLIGENCE in regards to the school or get burned.

Use the recruiters for what they are. Use more than one and keep going until you get what you want. There is no rush and there is certainly no shortage of jobs.

When it comes to the school - again - repeat - Do your own DUE DILLIGENCE.

1st - READ the contract over very carefully. If that doesn't scare you away then...

The best you can do is minimize the risk by talking to MORE THAN ONE of the foreign staff and ask POINTED AND SPECIFIC QUESTIONS (*when the boss is NOT listening over their shoulder). Don't accept non-specific answers and broad generalizations.

No foreign staff references to talk (directly and via e-mail) to = walk away now.

Accept NO EXCUSES for any reason.

I went through Footprints to secure a public school position with EPIK. They kept me informed during the application process and answered all of my questions within a day. They also had a representative who met us at the airport. They did not mislead me in anyway. However, a position with EPIK is slightly different, meaning that Footprints had no control or influence over the school in which I was placed. I would recommend Footprints, but you should also do your own research before accepting a contract.

lets put this in perspective.

Most stuff here is planned 30 days in advance - NOT 2 years in advance. Unless you have documents in hand and are prepared to get on a plane in the next 30 -90 days you are wasting everyone's time - ESPECIALLY the recruiter.

I would estimate that you are in about your 2nd year of college (if that far) and are certainly putting the cart before the horse.

Do us all a favor - go read the FAQs and finish school. When you graduate (or are at least close, then start with the inquiries).

Lots of things can and WILL certainly change before you are ever able to even seriously consider getting a job here.

Hey ttom... I'm graduating with my H.Ba in June, and hoping to attend teacher's college in September... If I'm not accepted this year I'm going to take a year off (maybe work in Korea) and then buy my way into a TC South of the Border (U.S.)...

I assure you, I've spent the last three weeks reading the FAQs... But I want to start my research in advance to A) Get it done... but more importantly B) To make sure this is for me...
