I remember a few years back I was thinking that working on the Hawaii of Korea (before I checked the winter temperatures and realized it was a lie) and working at a University with all the perks (before reading about this island University and its' lack of..) I thought a Uni job on Jeju-do would be great.. then I actually started reading..
I've only ever read terrible terrible things about Cheju University on this board. I'm often skeptical of half the bunk posted here but I have actually gone as far as to glance at contracts from this fuckinshit University and I think most of the criticisms that have been layed upon it are true.
It sounds crap. Unless you think a job should be as enjoyable as a yeasty-cunt sandwich with a bondaeggi glazing after a steak dinner this job doesn't sound good.
I guess if you replaced the word 'University' for 'crappy-hagwan' maybe it might seem almost reasonable apart from the low salary? Even then it isn't really working for me.. |

8.) 4 weeks paid vacation > It sounds like annual paid leave + public holidays and not 4 weeks of annual paid leave. I could be wrong.

Well everything else is crap, but I wouldn't worry about that. It's a National Uni so it's gonna be paid into. Legal obligations don't have to be written in if they're obliged by law anyway. No point wasting ink. I don't think any of my uni jobs have mentioned it... (Buts it's always been paid =(( ).
Everything else about the job is SHIT though =) Apart from it being on the rich man's Hawaii. |

People on this board have been following Cheju University for quite some time. It ALWAYS ranks at the very bottom of the heap in terms of pay, contact hours, and vacation. One word: Avoid.
Why? Well, we haven't been able to figure that out. Maybe they think there should be a sacrifice for living in a 'tropical paradise'. NOT!
Someone should tell them that universities in California and Hawaii actually pay more to offset the cost of living. |

'Why?' same reason all the way back to the old board is...
you should recognize the privilege of working for Cheju U. and be grateful |

The FLI at Jeju University is not part of the University...hence no pension plan. They are seperate...the FLI and the University. The FLI is on the grounds of the university however.
The visa is E1.
You can be farmed out to teach classes at the English department as well which comes under the university but your pay comes from the FLI.
You will not get airfare.
Housing is dorm and or the apartments.
Classes start at 7am, you might have another at 8am....if not....chill out for a few hours until the next class. Then it starts up again at 1pm until 9pm. The amount of classes you have will depend on how may students sign up for your class. And then there are the adjuma classes....wives of the "professors."
And you will get either screwed or loved. These adjuma's have nothing better to do but gossip...and gossip to their husbands' they will.....if you click with the class...great...if not....you will not be renewed for a second year.
The FLI exsists' to make money. |

hellofaniceguy, you sound like you have direct experience with these people at CNU, no? Feel free to palm me.
I'm not surprised by the replies and I noticed that there wasn't one good one, but I was hoping this place was better than your Typical Korean Operation (TKO) or is it Technical Knock Out? Well, it looks like another one bites the dust as they say. Looks like I should I tell them I like to get kissed before I get f**ked.
Kamsahamnida for the replies. |

| Give this place a wide berth, its reputation here on island is that of a crappy hogwon. Yu would be better off with epik or a good hogwon if there is suh a thing here on the island. |
