1, America is one of the wealthiest countries in the world, but why government doesn't provide some kind universal health insurance for all their citizen, there are millions Americans without health insurance.
Even country like Korea provide basic medical coverage for all their citizen, but why America can't do that ???
2, The law say if you didn't born in the land of Uncle Sam, you can't become a U.S president even if you are an American citizen, is this mean that children who were born in German/or any another countries while their Armed Forced parent stationed in German/or any another countries can't become a president of America ???
Same time children of illegale Mexican who were born in America can become a future president of America, is that fair ???
3, What is the purpose of day light saving ?
24 hours a day doesn't go anywhere, it's still 24 hour a day, the day light saving only bring confusing. I've heard the purpose of day light saving is energy saving, but what energy saving we are talking about ?
Guys can drink a longer hour at bars ???? That's energy saving ???
4, Why so many black folk sit at porch ouside their house even hot summer ? You don't see these kind things at white neighborhood, but you see many black folk sit outside their house even hot summer, is that better than sit inside with airconditioner ???
5, Why they call National Holiday as Federal Holiday and except Federal employees/Federal Government everybody/every business have to work/ open. So National Holiday is just for federal employees ???
I know all school kids have to go shool on National Holiday, why ????
6, Why so many American who graduate at least highschool often make spelling mistakes, even many college graduates make spelling mistakes,
English is handicaped language ???
There are many more, but today it's enough |

I'm not a darkie but I love sitting outside in the shade in the summer. It doesn't matter how hot it is, if i have some shade and a good book or newspaper i'd much rather be sitting outside watching the world then sitting inside with the aircon. I imagine there are possibly temperatures at which I'd quit liking this, though I was pretty happy sitting outside at 45c (maybe 120f?) in Australia.
If I ever own a house with a porch in Korea I'll be sitting outside there every damn day for about 8 months of the year.. |

1. I'm with you on this. I'm as conservative as they come, but our nation is really dropping the ball on this one.
2. My understanding is that, as long as you are not a naturalized citizen, you are elgible to become President. Maybe there are more technical rules.
3. I think the belief is that daylight savings extends the daylight hours longer into the evening closer to the time when most people go to bed...maybe believing that people are out, not using electricity, and then come home to bed not long after dusk. Hell, I dunno!
4. Hey, I'm a dedicated aircon guy. I sleep with a fan on 365 days a year. I'm also not black.
5. That always ticked me off as a student and as a public school teacher.
6. Spelling is overrated. |

No, my feeling is they are unemployed.
They should not sitting outside like that on week days, that's a time to work. They are not working, that's the reason I think. |

It reflects the fact that most people stay awake late. Everyone is awake at 9pm, but very few are still awake at 5am. So time is shifted so that power needn't be used at 7-8pm or 8-9pm, when everyone is awake, and could be used at 5am, when few are awake.
This saves something like 2-3% of energy costs a year. That's billions of dollars. And, its nice to have light out at 9pm during June. |

There are a lot of lazy louts who would abuse the system, and there would be a higher demand for medical practitioners who would have too many salary expectations. It would burden a system that does just fine by filling the pockets of its rich elite who are connected with insurance companies.

The Armed forces are considered to be American territory/ land. That's why you can sometimes see addresses/states listed as "Armed Forces Korea" or "Armed Forces Germany"
The illegal kids should be sent back to Mexico and have to wait in line with everyone else. The burden and guilt should be on their parents.

They pawned off their air conditioners to pay late credit fees so they could keep their gold necklaces. Or they have to sit outside so they can spot potential customers for drugs.

Because kids suck and need to stay in school.

No, there are just so many people who see spelling as being inconsequential when it is actually a reflection of their own ineptitude and sloppiness. It's entrenched so deeply that it is actually a source of sluggishness and absolute stupidity. They don't respect the beauty of the written word. |

The rich can afford their own health insurance and the very poor can depend on Medcaid, it's the middle class who are blooding, the hard workers in society, I really think America is shame on this. |

This is a different issue than the one you originally raised.

Originally, the issue for you was that they should be inside with the air conditioner, not that they were were unemployed. Now you're shifting the goalposts mid-game. |

Rationale and original idea
The main purpose of Daylight Saving Time (called "Summer Time" in many places in the world) is to make better use of daylight. We change our clocks during the summer months to move an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening.
If you live near the equator, day and night are nearly the same length (12 hours). But elsewhere on Earth, there is much more daylight in the summer than in the winter. The closer you live to the North or South Pole, the longer the period of daylight in the summer. Thus, Daylight Saving Time (Summer Time) is usually not helpful in the tropics, and countries near the equator generally do not change their clocks.
Indeed, some say that the primary reason that Daylight Saving Time is a part of many societies is simply because people like to enjoy long summer evenings, and that reasons such as energy conservation are merely rationalizations.
The idea of daylight saving was first conceived by Benjamin Franklin (portrait at right) during his sojourn as an American delegate in Paris in 1784, in an essay, "An Economical Project."

The bit about not being President is about being born an American citizen, not being born in America. John McCain was born in Panama. |

When they say that America is the wealthiest nation on earth, that really doesn't take into account that they are the most indebted nation on earth as well.
Also, the top 1% of society hold most of the wealth. America has more poor people than many nations such as Canada, Korea, Australia, etc. have total population.
I have a question:
Why does it bother you MissSeoul that black people like to sit on their porch even in the summer heat? Air conditioning costs money to both own and use. It is a new invention...what do you think people of other colors did before the air con?
Canadians sit out in their back yards in the summer heat...should we be forced to hide in our air conditioned houses? We have enough cold during the winter months...sometimes it is nice to sit outside and get some nature. |

Miss Seoul, do you have something against black people sitting outside on their porches? Actually, many North Americans like going out in the sun.
I like going out if it is a sunny day to sit on my porch, and I am not black.
Who cares about black or Chinese people sitting on porches?! That's a very strange question to ask.
As far as health insurance, I think everyone should have health insurance, but since the time of the British control of the US and the fight over taxes, Americans have been against anything that might lead to the raising of taxes. Taxes would have to be raised to pay for health insurance. Also, individualism is very strong in the United States when compared to Europe and Canada. By the way, as I understand it health insurance is not very good in Korea, but it is true you do at least have it.
As far as daylight savings time, it does save energy somewhat. It encourages people to use less electricity. Other countries do it as well. |

The Insurance Industry and Pharmeceutical companies are too powerful.

I believe you're misinformed about the first one. Regarding the second one, people born in the U.S. use to be U.S. citizens just by being born there. They've now closed up that loophole, so if you were born of Mexican parents who jumped over the fence to give birth to you, you wouldn't be able to become a President of the U.S.

It was originally something farming-related.

Most likely because you are watching some American TV movie about the American South. It's HOT there, and the majority of houses in the Deep South HAVE porches, and those regions also have the most African-Americans in the highest numbers than other states in the U.S. I'd imagine white Southerners also sit on porches just the same.

Don't usually reply to a sock OP, but as Tiger Beer said it's to do with the heat. If you go to Greece, Malta or Italy they sit outside in the evening, it's actually for a couple of reasons. The house is too hot and uncomfortable to sit in. Not everyone has AC and they don't need it.
Also it's friendly. They're lives aren't based around getting fat and watching tv. They sit on the porch so they can talk with people walking past and see the evening in. Their friends might be passing so it's a chance for a chat. A lot of countries love to talk/discuss things America and Britain is one that it's becoming a lot rarer. I think it's really nice especially the times I've been to Malta and seen all the people sat on their doorsteps with greetings and talking. Very nice. |
