Hi, quick question:
I'm trying to find some information about Haebongchon, but I can't. When I typed in variations of how I think it's spelled in Korean into Naver, nothing came up. Is it a neighborhood? A street? A "dong" of Yongsan? How do you write it in Korean? Any basic information would help. Thanks. |

It's 해방천 or maybe (헤..I don't remember..)
It's right next to Itaewan and the Namsan Number 2 and 1 tunnels.
It's not really a dong but it is a district. Pretty much every taxi driver in Seoul knows the area. 'Regular' Korean folk don't.. you have to tell them you live in yongsan-gu or near Itaewan. I think Haebangchon it's part of Yongsan-2 dong.. or it might be part of a couple of dongs. Not really sure.
Lot's of Nigerians, Thais, Filipinos, English teachers and military types live in the area. The local shops contain blackmarket import goods from on base and a few things from costco. They're also way overpriced.
There's Indigos and New Phillies for western food. The korean food in the area sucks. There's a coupla western bars too: The VFW canteen, New Phillies, The Orange Tree and Ssen.
Most of the houses are old and consist of apartments in 2-5 story buildings (usually one apartment to each floor). Koreans don't call these apartments =)
It's on a steep hill so walking around sucks. Especially in summer when it's hot. And also in winter when it's icey..
It's on the edge of the Yongsan base. The eastern(?) side. The Yongsan wall is one edge of Haebangchon.
Rent is very cheap there for Seoul and not too much key money is needed.
The closest subway stop is Noksapyeong. Sometimes people call Haebangchon Noksapyeong. It's about 10 minutes walk from the subway to the area with Phillies and Indigo.
Are you looking for info to write about it for your blog? Or are you thinking of moving to Seoul? If you're thinking of moving to Seoul you won't like haebangchon. |

| It's a neighborhood in Yongsan 2 ga-dong. Usually spelt "Haebangchun". |

If you're looking for a place to live, and want, for whatever reason, to live near Itaewon, you'd be better off checking out Noksapyung, or the area in Itaewon behind Gecko's.
The upsides of living there include about the cheapest montly rent per pyung to be found in Seoul (or at least an area of Seoul you'd want to live), and a pretty central location. |
