For contracts through SMOE / EPIK / GEPIK

teachers that say for example, negotiate longer holidays...

whats the deal here?

did you accept a verbal offer from the school....or did you insist on having your contract reworded accordingly?

Most of us just have the OFFICIAL days off in our contracts. Depending on where you work that will be 14, 19 or 21 WORKING days.

In addition you also get 2 calendar weeks more if you re-sign for a 2nd or subsequent contract at the same school.

Then there are the UNOFFICIAL days off. These are at the discretion of the principal and can run from 10-25 MORE days off but you are supposed to stay in the neighborhood.

You can also bank your extra classes and get time off in lieu of overtime pay.

You can either have them reword the original contract, or have them write up an amendment letter in both Korean and English stating the amount of consecutive vacation days you negotiate, and any other items you have negotiated. You may have to have your recruiter write out the English translation if no one at the school has sufficient English. Have the amendment letter signed by your principal and attached to the back of your contract. Some directors do not think it is possible to rewrite the original contract, so if you encounter this thinking then just go with the signed amendment letter.

Additional note: Never accept a verbal agreement. Always get everything in writing. This is good business practise.

Is this written into the contract? If I remember correctly, the two extra weeks was offered as a bonus when the time for re-signing came around. Just wondering it's something we should be assuming while we plan for our summer vacations.

It's certainly in my contract.
