Hey,
I would like to get an inexpensive laptop... I am pretty open to specs. Email [email protected] if you have something available or know where to look for 2nd hand stuff. |

There are a few 2nd hand laptop places in both the bus terminal building (big blue building at the other end of the walkway over the railroad yard) and the Son-in Plaza (the place with the big Gigabyte sign to the right of the blue building) by Yongsan station.

What do you consider inexpensive? We can help you out better if you post your price range. |

For about 200,000 more you can get a new one with great specs at Techno Mart. I was in a similar situation a while back. Really nice used laptops are hard to find in Korea, even on the Korean sites. I got:
ASUS Dual Core 1.73 (or 1.8 something, I can't remember and it won't make a difference)
160 gig HD
2 gigs of ram
128 video card
wireless etc.
Windows XP Black installed in English, or you can get Vista but Vista will annoy you. They also give you Office 2003. They can install Windows and Office for you but it's like 20 bucks more.
To get the 2 gigs of ram you have to pay 20000 won more (20 for the Chinese ram and 40 for the Korean ram).
Anyways, the whole package came out to about 740000 or 750000 becaise opted for the extra Korean made gig of ram. It also includes a nice carrying bag, mouse and some other stuff.
For about 500,000 I couldn't find anything really great compared to what I got for a couple of hundred thousand more.
Good luck. |

We bought my mother-in-law a new DELL notebook from www.dell.co.kr a few months ago for 550,000 won shipped (and we could choose XP over Vista). It's very nice, and has a dual-core AMD CPU with the larger cache, and a monitor upgrade.
We're very happy with it.
Have a Korean help you buy it. We found DELL to be very competitive with Youngsan, if not better. The downside was that we had to wait about 9 days to get it.
Ugh... I just checked DELL Korea's site. The good deals are currently no more. In fact, they suck at the moment. The changed the body styles on their lower-priced Insprion line (what we have) and now they are 200,000 more. Could be the exchange rate, too.
Go to Youngsan. |

Yeah the problem is that I am pretty sure I am going to get a MacBook Pro once they fall in price a bit. I was hoping to get a cheapish one just to get me through the year... one that I didn't have to worry about traveling through SE Asia with. |

I lost the business card but head to techno mart to the main laptop floor. Look for the vendors that sell ASUS, I only saw 2 or 3 that did. Their prices are roughly the same. This is what it looks like (note that the specs are slightly different in CPU and hard drive
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/134522/show_product_overview
I double checked the specs:
Intel Pentium Dual CPU T2330 @1.6 (so you're really running at 3.2)
2 gigs of RAM (I opted for the Korean Ram but it was 40000W compared to the 20000W Chinese Ram, it normally comes with just 1 gig)
Windows XP Black Pro. (ask for the English Version and not Vista, you can do the install or pay 10-20000W or so to have them install it and Office).
160gig hard drive
15.4 wxga
128 gig (shared) Video
wireless
DVD multi
mouse
carrying bag
all the cd's and booklets
** if you want them to install Windows and Office you should wait a couple of hours or pay 12000 to have them deliver it to you the next day.
*** the sound on this laptop is not super high. Good enough if you max it but not super loud. Everything else on it is awesome and super fast. Watching movies on this thing is awesome. The screen is so clear.
***the batterlife is average. You can adjust the settings to make it last longer.
Compared to all the other ones I looked for this was the best price and great quality.
Good luck |

I assume it came with original, legal Microsoft software? Every time I go to buy a computer in Korea, they want to do a ghost installation of the OS. I hate that. But I'd bet that mail order from Dell, you get hooked up with the good stuff...right? |

Yep, it's all legal. It was packed exactly as it would be if you purchased it in the USA, only the OS was in Korean. Oh, and you can choose English if you want... nice they give you a legal choice.
You'll get a legal OS if you buy new from any major manufacturer here -- HP, IBM, Samsung, etc.
Just don't get Vista Home. Make sure it has Ultimate or Premium or whatever. Or XP, as I did.
The current Dell prices are not as low, but they include Intel processors at the moment, so they're a bit better than the AMD dual-core I had. In any case, both are about fast enough for most things people tend to do with a notebook. |

You know, when I go to the big name dealers at the electronics marts, its always ghost OSes...I'm wondering if they aren't really HP just because they sell HP products and have an HP sign over their stall/booth... |

Because it is an illegal copy, not original software. |
