Is it just me or is it so bleeding obvious that if all those orientals look the same then they are all going to act the same? Cool (ie bowing their head all the time, cooking you rice and stuff, always building little cars and scooters whilst taking photos of each other doing 'v' signs... oh and they all know how to do karate and can break a brick in half with one karate chop)

just like a number of people have said before, you can't rank groups like this.
A's experience is different from B's.

i've had people in korea and japan go the extra mile to help me out when i was lost...and i've had people in both countries act like they couldn't be bothered to help me with anything.

what constitutes "friendliness" depends on the person.
in japan and korea, if you have a good friend, you can gain entrance into the "in group". and that allows you to become friendly with a lot of different types of people.

if you have to start from scratch, then you have to spend more time sorting out the bad from the good.

I had an experience of hanging out with a large group of Koreans IN Japan for a few days and I can honestly say the Japanese are more polite, genuine, and mature than Koreans hands down. I was blown away by the differences between them. As soon as I was introduced to the Koreans, they immediately starting getting in my face and acted like monkeys, saying 'hello hello' over and over, shaking my hand constantly, introducing themselves several times and interrupting my conversations. even grabbing me. One Korean guy started feeling my pecks and I shoved him out of the way. I was pissed.

The Japanese?? They couldn't care less about me and that's exactly how I like it. They treated me dare I say as an equal?? And the Japanese are more like Americans, they are individualists who couldn't care less about the 'group'. The Korean group mentality is unbelievably childish.

And for those of you saying Thailand is friendly, what planet are you on? Thai people ARE NOT friendly at all. They are the rudest people I have ever met aside from the arabs. Thai people never smile, they will do anything to take advantage of you, they interfere with your business, yelling loudly. How can you possibly think they are friendly when they deliberately try to rip you off with every single exchange of money??

Yes this is generalizing but it is based on personal experience. I had a talk with my friends the other day and they said this. That if you live in a big city that tends to have more foreigners, foreigners would be accepted more; however, if you live in a small city or rural area, where foreigners practically don't exist, there is going to be more tension towards foreigners. Now when I made my comments it was towards more the tension I got in my town and other small areas. I will admit when I went to the big cities like Seoul or Bucheon most people kept to themselves. So after thinking a bit I have to agree with my friends there is more tension towards foreigners in the small or rural areas than in the big cities.

Hey sadsac did you seriously meet North Koreans? When? That's the one nationality in the world I don't think I've ever met anyone from! Nigereans (not Nigerians but from Niger), Zimbabweans (lived with one), even Iraqis and Mongolians--but never North Koreans! Too cool!!! Where???

I remember when I went to a small town a few hours north of Kwangju (can't remember the name), people crossed the street when they saw me!

Interestingly Thailand was rated as the most xenophobic country last year ahead of Korea.

Korea was even behind most of the middle eastern countries. I will need to try and dig up the ranking again.

Thailand being the most xenophobic country??
What is your source??

Not worked up but capital letters and cussing sure makes people think you are. Though I do think moderators express favortism because they threatened to ban me for vulgar language and so called personal attacks but when it comes to others they actually encourage it.

Maybe Koreans aren't the friendliest, but they're pretty nice and really helpful if they see you in need--I've always noticed that about them.

donselma, I always liked Seoul too. I always found that outside of Seoul I was more annoyed (higher concentration of the older generation perhaps).

I would have to strongly agree about the Koreans when socializing. The shaking hands constantly, the constant clinking of glasses saying 'one shot', the introducing themselves over and over, and just total lack of social skills when drinking socially. I always went way out of my way to avoid drinking with any Korean guys present in particular.

I'm in Japan now, and the times I have drank with Japanese, it is totally different. Just cool and relaxed. They treat you normal and with respect. Conversations are very normal and nothing is assumed (unlike Korea where they assume everything).

I've only been in Japan for two months, but I still expecting the Korean socialization stuff, and it just doesn't happen here.

LMAO! In Thailand, men would constantly feel my arms/pecs. I had a tuk-tuk driver in Chiang Mai reach out and touch my arm while I was driving my moped in slow traffic! Personally, I find this hilarious and don't mind the attention.

My girlfriend is Mongolian and the friendliest person I know... but to extrapolate her actions to other Mongolians would be foolish!
