Here's how I try to save at least 1 million won a month (about half my monthly salary)...
1. Buy in groceries in bulk at Costco or other discount wholesalers.
2. Go out 1 weekend night a week.
3. Eat korean style as much as possible... korean food is cheap...
4. Buy beer in bulk (cases of the big bottles are cheapest)
5. Walk as much as possible. (Good exercise too!) Take taxis when there are no other alternatives and always share a cab with a buddy to divide the fare.
6. Send text messages more than you call someone... also many ways to send text messages on the internet.
7. Don't smoke!
8. Buy classic clothes that never go out of style. You won't need to buy clothes to keep up with the latest trends every year...
9. Rent videos at home and download movies/music from the internet.
10. Meet friends / dates for coffee or tea instead of dinner...
Any other suggestions to save money? |

I don't spend coins.
I take all the coins I collect during the course of a day and dump them into a large pickle jar that sits on my dresser.
I go to the bank every six months or so to cash them in. Once I had three full pickle jars. I had nearly 500,000 won. |

I could save more than one million if I didn't travel. Australia set me back way too much, and now I really have to go to the U.S.
Next year its third world travel only! |

Just kidding!!
But really how did the bank react? I would think that they wouldn't like to get that many coins at one time. Not that it matters since it is currency. I am just wondering since i have a lot of coins saved up as well and didn't know what to do with them |

Put it in the bank and don't spend it.
There's a simple economic theory on how to end up rich no matter what imcome you have.
"Spend less than you earn"
I think it' too simple for a lot of people to grasp.
I have found though, that living in Seoul it's harder to save as much as in a smaller place. |

Pick and choose your entertainment.
Food/utilities will usually be a set amount every month that you can budget accordingly.
Entertainment is where most foreigners waste their money. Case in point is the guys who have been here 5 years and don't even have 5mil for key money.
When you entertain yourself, just think: Is this XXXX item worth 3 hours of screaming kindy kids...or is this item worth a month of work?
Remember you can't have it all on the crap salaries they pay here, and it should be easy. |

Just wondering how much you guys spend on groceries and eating out per week.
I eat very well. Most of my meals I eat out but also supplement with store-bought food items.
I'd say I can get by buying 30,000-40,000 per week on food.
The rest of my salary I use for entertainment or to send home for saving and investing purposes.

I buy cans of hot-pepper tuna and mix it with rice...a tasty mix...
I eat instant noodles, kimbap, macaroni and cheese as well...
I try to get by with 60,000 including going out to decent restaurants a couple nights a week... |
