So I'm looking at a position at the SLP in Bundang. Its middle school only and the hours are 1-8:00pm, pay is 2.1
I haven't signed any contracts yet or even went in for an interview, but the school has my resume and seems to be interested. However, I do remember seeing an article on Dave's about how all SLPs are garbage and how I should avoid them like the plague...
That being said, what about this SLP? It is in Bundang, which is good, the pay is good and it's only middle school. Is it worthwhile or should I avoid this one? |

Which subway station is it near? There are numerous SLPs in Bundang. |

I'm not entirely sure. I have to find that out. In the meantime, what is the general reputation like of SLPs in Bundang? |

I live near the one near Migeum station and know a few of the teachers there. They generally seem happy at the place and say their boss is decent. I know a couple of them have been there for over 4 years. I''ve thought about applying there when my current job is done. Can't speak for the other SLPs though. |

That's good to hear. The people who recommended me to it said it was good too. I'm just trying to be safe. |

I cannot speak for the reputation of SLP. It would be a good idea to ask questions to the foreign teachers when the employer isn't listening. For example;
Working Hours
( 1 ) What are your working hours?
( 2 ) When do you start preparing for classes and how long do you prepare for them?
( 3 ) How long is your break and does your employer allow you to use it freely?
( 4 ) How many classes do you teach per day/week?
( 5 ) How long do you teach per class?
( 6 ) What does a working hour consist of?
Wages/Overtime
( 1 ) Does your employer pay overtime wages or avoid paying them?
( 2 ) Does your employer pay in cash or by electronic deposit?
Payslips/Pay receipts
( 1 ) Does your employer provide teachers a pay receipt that clearly defines deductions from your monthly salary for (1) pension (2) income tax (3) health insurance?
Health Insurance
( 1 ) Has your employer provided you with a health insurance card?
( 2 ) Does your employer pay contributions for both parties to the National Health Insurance Corporation?
Pension
( 1 ) Does your employer pay into the Korean Pension Plan?
Income Taxes
( 1 ) Does your employer deduct the correct amount for income taxes from the teacher's monthly salary?
( 2 ) Does your employer pay deductions from your monthly salary for income taxes to the tax office?
Severance Pay
( 1 ) Does your employer always pay teachers their severance prior to/upon completion of their contract?
Living Conditions
( 1 ) Was your apartment clean upon arrival?
( 2 ) Were you provided with all the furnishings as stated in your contract?
( 3 ) Were the furnishings/appliances in working order when you moved into your apartment?
( 4 ) Are the bills in your name or your employer's name?
( 5 ) Does your employer respect your right to privacy?
Paid Annual Leave
( 1 ) When and how do you use your paid annual leave?
Dismissal
( 1 ) Does your employer have a reputation of firing teachers for the sole purpose of not paying them last months wages, airfare and severance pay?
Financial
( 1 ) Is the school in financial trouble?
Discipline Methods
( 1 ) Is your employer abusive towards the students or teachers?
Paid Sick Leave
( 1 ) Have you used a day of paid sick leave?
( 2 ) If so, how did your employer react?
( 3 ) If teachers use a day of paid sick leave, does your employer require them to work another day to make up for the hours missed?
Students/Teachers
( 1 ) How many students attend the school?
( 2 ) How many teachers, foreign and Korean, work at the school?

hen it comes to SLP my only comment is
READ THE CONTRACT CAREFULLY BEFORE you sign on the dotted line.
Be aware that most SLPs contract you for up to 23 classes of 80 minutes per class PER WEEK ...
You should also be aware for example that public schools contract 22 classes per week for the same (or more) salary - SLP= TWICE the classroom time for the same money. Most hakwons contract for 30 classes of 50 minutes - still 25% less time in front of the class for the same money.
Then there are the other issues to worry about. |

Be wary of contract hours.
Ask to speak to at least two foreign teachers: one current and one past.
2.1 seems a little low considering the market for teachers with experience these days. |

Are you sure that's only middle schoolers? Unless you're on your ass for the first 3 hours of each day I have a feeling you'll be teaching other levels regardless of what they tell you. I work at an SLP that has 1400+ students, we don't start teaching middle schoolers untill 4:00 or so and run till 9:00. Most of the "middle school" classes have non middle schoolers in them who are too good for their age level. They aren't that much younger though. I know I can't speak about that school or what they have on the go, but it seems odd. |
