Singer Cheon Gets 1-Year Jail Term

Cheon In-kwon
By Kim Rahn
Staff Reporter

Rock singer Cheon In-kwon was sentenced to a one-year prison term for illegal drug use.

The Seoul High Court Friday upheld a lower court's ruling and handed down the jail term and a 546,000 won fine to the 54-year-old singer who was arrested on charges of using marijuana and other illegal drugs.

``Although he'd been caught with drugs three times since 1987, he received lenient suspended jail terms, as courts acknowledged his talent as a musician. But he kept using marijuana and methamphetamines,'' judge Choi Seong-jun said in the ruling.

``If he had received heavy punishment from the start, he might not have taken drugs again. We regret that the previous lenient penalties have made him repeat the crime,'' the judge said.

Cheon was arrested last August on charges of possessing methamphetamines on several occasions since March 2006, and for possession of marijuana at his home in central Seoul in February last year. He was caught upon arriving at Incheon International Airport from the Philippines, where he fled in March 2007 to evade arrest.

Enforce the meth ruling. Throw out the marijuana ruling. One makes you a danger to others. One makes you peaceful.

He was drinking while doing the drugs so he was not responsible for his actions during that time... that means he shouldn't have any charges against him, right? (using Korean law logic here)
