Hi folks -

am new to the forum and going to korea in the new year - i'm sure theres been loads of posts along the same vein as this one but i am just trying to figure out where in korea to base myself...

will it be one of the seemingly large arrays of seoul suburbs, pusan, deagu, numerous small towns....

the question is - where do u live and why would u recommend or discommend it?!!

cheers guys - all thoughts appreciated!

Seoul. I can't live without the modernity it offers. Having said that, I saved more in Pohang pop 500 000 and the locals were friendlier too.

Yeah definitely Seoul or one of the immediate satellite cities.
Make sure you're not a sucker like me though and get one on a subway line.
The Kyonggi-do bus system sucks. Most buses stop running beofe 10pm.
The area north west of Seoul, Hwajeong / Ilsan (?) is really nice, feels like it's a million miles from Seoul but is only 30 minutes away by subway.

Busan is a fine option and has a lot of the "modernity " of Seoul while being cheaper to live in.
It has beaches (no byron bay of course but beaches none the less).
Nice hiking areas.
Good food and you can find most of what you need.
