I'll probably get some flak for this, but...
With all the stuff on the Olympics and Tibet, I was just wondering how many people care about the Olympics. I think that the nationalism is actually pretty useless.
Even more importantly, why does anyone care how fast someone can swim in a pool going back and forth 50 times? What purpose does that have? Some of these wins (from track, etc) are so close, I don't even think they really won. Also, none of the conditions ever really change. It's still a pool or a circular rink...
Anyway, just my opinion on some of the games and the Olympics as a whole. |

Next summer, Korea will be in the backyard of the Beijing Summer Olympics. Are you going to the greatest show on earth? I hope to.
Nothing compares to the majesty of the Olympics. Not everyone likes track, but Im from Oregon, site of the 2008 Olympic track and field trials.
I've spent hours transfixed by old black and white Olympic video footage with staccato narration: Helsinki. 1952. Emile Zatopek, a Czech Army officer, arrives at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics having already won a gold medal in the 1948 London Olympics. But he is about to surpass all his previous achievements. In the space of two weeks, Zatopek, or the Engine as he was universally known, completes arguably the greatest achievement in Olympic history, winning gold medals in the 5,000 meters, 10,000 meters and the marathon.
Olympic drama is spine-tingling to me from Stevie Wonder singing Imagine to Bob Beamon smashing the world long jump record by two feet in 1968.
To this day, I get misty-eyed when I view footage of Oregon's Steve Prefontaine in the 1972 Munich Olympics. America's greatest distance runner, Pre died at 24 in a car accident after holding every American record from 2,000 meters to 10,000 meters. Four decades later, the fiery charismatic Pre, the inspiration for Nike, remains the most popular sports figure in Oregon sports history.
I love the opening ceremony, especially when the athletes march in during the parade of nations. The feeling of diversity and harmony is inspiring, even if it's symbolic, like when North and South Korea march under one flag.
The sense of unity reminds me of the nostalgia I feel when I watch the movie Woodstock |

I don't care about the Olympics, so it's no personal loss to boycott them.

If you think it's next summer, you're going to be pretty let down. |

I can take it or leave it. I wouldn't get on my high horse about a countries ethics when countries closer to home are blatantly disregarding similar human rights, engaged in 'legal' wars etc.
I'll be more interested in the American athletes who win something then next year be found to be part of some drug lab and have their medals taken off them. Never seems to amaze me how these things are so quickly forgotten and these cheats are allowed back into competition. Either test no-one and have a drug filled Olympics or test every single athlete. Not just sporadic testing. |

I lost interest when it became obvious there were 2 types of athletes
Those on steroids
Those yet to be caught on steroids.

You don't mean people like Ben Johnson, do you? Surely not.
Oh, sorry. He's Canadian. My bad.
PS: When was the last time a Brit won Wimbledon? |

Nice idea Ya-ta boy:
Following a short list of Olympic and other American athletes found out goofed up to the eyeballs:
Marion Jones
CJ Hunter
Floyd Landis
Barry Bonds
Kelli White
Sandra Glover
Tim Montgomery
Justin Gatlin
Eric Thomas
Calvin Harrison
Chris Phillips
Kevin Toth
Regina Jacobs
Sean Sherk and Hermes Franca,
Maybe even Flo-Jo, although a deep voice and dying in her thirties shouldn't make you worry about it.
Hey even the Balco lab that suppied Dwayne Chambers is helping him forge a career in the American football league.
In a country where sports cheating is rife and to a certain degree acceptable with the media covering it so weakly, then some major competitions come along which have great political importance and stature and they get found out. Yes terrible. To be seen at the top of the Medal table gives a country a significant world standing, what lengths will countries go to be at the top? In America's case all the way.
Also the Brit's are crap at tennis. At least we don't hide our crapness by cheating on the scale of the states. Chambers got caught and he got absolutely killed by the media and I doubt he'll ever be accepted as representing us again. |
