is there ever a possibility of getting fired at a hagwon?

I teach 10 classes a day...so I don't lesson plan any more and I give free time to classes often...simply because I am burnt out. Most of the kids in my school like me, but some of the parents have complained from watching that monitor in the front of our school about the free time. One of my bosses talked to me about it yesterday.

Getting fired would be a good thing. Keep up the good work and make sure that part of that free time includes you past out on the desk maybe with your shirt off.

I'm already six months in and need to finish because I want a good recommendation from this experience on my job resume. I don't just want some empty gap. I'm the only foreigner at my school right now and am very popular with the younger students. Should I be worried, though?

When you get the "free time" talk let them know that you are teaching too many hours to have decent classes.

Six months in? See if you can find another job, negotiate a release letter, and enjoy teaching instead of being worked to death and taken advantage of.
10 classes a day!!!!!!!!!!!! why are you doing it?

Last I heard, you need to have been employed at your current location for nine months before you can do all of that.

If you are burnt out, you need to change. Doing this for another 6 months will be both physically & mentally devastating. You are working FAR too many classes for this to be normal. Bosses are now trying to get as much out of you b4 you leave since they know replacing you will be very very hard. They know this & will use you as a disposable towel to soak in as much cash as possible.

Get fired. Find a better job & you'll see how much life can improve.

Before I came here, I worked in a hot mill third shift for 14 day intervals with five day breaks in between those for a lot less money than I make now. This isn't the worst thing in the world. At this point, I just want to finish what I came here to do. Besides, how the hell could I get a letter of release when I'm their only foreigner?

well, if you are defending your job now, as you say, it's not the worst thing is it? so what's your question? do you want to get fired? or are you merely worried that if you continue to take breaks in your classes your boss will fire you? How can we offer advice if we're not sure what you are asking?

I could be wrong here but I think the OP's employer isn't paying overtime wages according to labor laws.

(1) What are your working hours?
(2) What constitutes a "working hour" as stated in your contract?
(3) How many hours do you teach a day?
(4) Does your employer provide you a well written payslip/payreceipt? If so, what is written on it?
(5) When are your eligible to earn overtime wages?.

No, I don't want to get fired. I am worried that if my lessons don't improve I will get fired.

I got paid overtime for half of last month even though I worked overtime the entire month. My boss gave me some kind of crazy reason that he hadn't officially written my schedule down or something. My contract says 6 hours...I teach nine 35 minute classes and one 50 minute class every day. Two months ago, I was teaching 12 classes every day...but that is another story.

Check your contract. Hopefully, there is something that says they must provide you with teaching material.

I have something in mine which states "Employee must only use material provided by employer". If you have something like this, just print out the contract and highlight the term. Sit down with the school director and show it to them.

If they want you teaching differently, it is also their responsibility to provide you with the resources. You can't be expected to buy them yourself.

Getting fired from a hakwon is not a bad thing. Trial by fire. Most of us cut our teeth in them.

Get your documents ready and apply for the public schools in your neighborhood (assuming you like your neighborhood).

Take your leave when it is convenient for you. They are not likely to fire you until they can find another foreigner to replace you and that is not likely to happen any time soon.

Put in your time and start looking now for something better (and there are lots of jobs that are better than that).
