HELP!
I had a job lined up in Bundang. I sent all of my paperwork to the recruiter and have been waiting for my visa issuance number. I got an e-mail saying that the school changed their mind. They called my old director, and he had bad things to say about me.
1. I take a nervous sedative. (I take about three whole xanax pills a week. The only way my director knew is because he had to go the first time to the doctor's with me to translate.)
2. I missed at least one day a month, every month.
The recruiter said that my old director is weird. He tried to call my old director, but he wouldn't speak to the recruiter and hung up on him.
Here's what I don't get. My director and his wife loved me. They wanted me to stay another year, but I politely refused. Also, I stayed an extra month for that #%$@! I don't know what's going on.
The only thing that I can think of is to fax my old paychecks to the recruiter to show the employer. It would prove that I never missed any time at my old school.
By the way, it's so much easier to look for a job if you're going through at least two recruiters. So what do I do? Just ask my recruiter to send all of my paperwork back? I can't imagine that he'd spend the money to send it FedEX.
I'm a bit burned out from this right now. Any help would be appreciated. |

"By the way, it's so much easier to look for a job if you're going through at least two recruiters."
How do you get 2 recruiters to work together? From different recruiting companies or the same?
I talked to two recruiters from the same company, and the second one told me to not talk to the first one because she was "a girl" and the other recruiter will get in trouble. LOL.
Regarding your situation, can you look for another school which won't ask for a reference from your old school? It looks like you have your paperwork already set for 3 months. You're good to go. Find another school.
Maybe I am missing something. |

Well...there could be a few reasons.
1: Headhunter gave the job to someone else.
2: New school found someone better.
3: Old boss is a jerk and angry that you didn't stay.
--Just don't give the last boss as a reference. |

if oyu need a job quickly , then apply to
GEPIK
OR EPIK
they will take anyone.
Actually its common for employers to ask you to stay another year .And once the teacher refuses , the hogwon owner tries to rip you off.
It happended to me once. The owner offered me a 100 000 won a month raise and a re signing bonus of 500 000 won ( i think??).I declined , and he ended up ripping me off and I lost his reference as well..korea!?!? |

Thanks -
I just talked to my old coworker, and he said that the boss mentioned positively that some schools have been asking about me.
Now when I think of it, the new school probably backed down because I did mention on my medical report that I take Xanax. Either the school or the recruiter made up the lies about my missing time off from work.
The recruiter did say, "However, I have this position for you, and this director believes you." ??
Thanks for your input, bellum99 |

Oh, I meant that I had two different recruiters from two different companies, e-mailing me different jobs. When I posted my resume on this site, I had e-mails and calls from about 15 or so different companies. I told most of them that I had found another recruiter, but honestly, I worked with two. I let both recruiters know up front that I'll work with them, but if someone else offers me a really good position, I'll take it. They told me that they understand and it happens all the time. |

Update: (If anyone gives a flying fig.)
A different recruiter offered me what seemed like a perfect job. Unfortunately, she told me that she got scared, because she called my old boss. As soon as she mentioned my name, he started screaming at her. She said that I can't have an interview with the new school because they want a reference.
Also, I realized that I didn't write "Xanax" on my one health form; the old boss said something.
Aside from a blacklist site, what other choices do I have? |

Just say the old school closed down and the director is gone. Don't give a phone number or use a different school name. The Koreans don't really care. Lying isn't really crime in Korea...just say what you have to. |

First, your prospective employer has every right to call your old one (and indeed should), and your old one has every right to give you a bad reference. Perhaps your old employer was just being nice to you for fear you'd be an even worse teacher if he wasn't. And in case you didn't already know after a year here, taking sick days unless you have to be hospitalised is considered very, very bad form over here.
(I'm not speculating on whether you were or weren't a good teacher, but just imagining what his perspective might be). |

That's just it. He lied to the recruiter and said that I missed work once a month, every month. I told my recruiter that I can fax every single paycheck to prove that I was always there. |

Hmm, in that case he could just be upset that you didn't want to re-sign with him. When I left my first job (on terrible terms with wonjong-babosaki) I had two letters of reference, one in English and one in Hanguel, from two former co-workers, and told prospective employers that I left because the academy was terrible and I wanted a better job. I made no secret about the fact that I left because I was disappointed with my ex-boss and thus getting in touch with him would have brought no surprises. As it was I was offered a job with all five places that I interviewed, including one deperate principal and one desperate director who basically begged me to come. |

Well...there are two English words never taught or mentioned in a number of hogwans and they are "professionalism" and "integrity". Seeing as how his true colors are showing by his back-stabbing and dirty dealing, you too, can play by those rules. If you have a good rapport and reputation amoung students and parents, word can spread very quickly about how badly you were treated. THAT or...
Simply show up and confront him, "What are you doing? Why are you doing this? I fulfilled my contract and now you're keeping me from getting another job. You are messing with my livelihood. Do you understand? Is this someting I need to good a labor board about? etc, etc..." But don't be a puppy about it. Your tone and manner should be aggressive and he may back down or it might make it worse. At this point, I don't see how you have anyting to lose since he's already giving you a bad rep and that's a career killer here.
But you must have a clean record and've trully fulfilled all the obligations of your contract or you simply don't have a leg to stand on then ya gotta suck it up and move on as best ya can. |

That is not a valid statement.

The hagweon owner that was cheating me even offered me a job after my coworker and I defeated her in the Labor, Pension, and Tax cases against her. Some folks are completely immune to the concept of consequences for their actions. |

Never have your boss take you to see a doctor if it is to get any type of mood altering drug. Have a Korean friend, preferable a student of yours do that. Or, just be brave enough to walk in on your own with medical card in hand. If you can not get what you need, then go to the next one, etc. I have many friends (several were also my students) who are doctors. Most Korean doctors know English well, and all enough to understand what your problem is and what you need. And, many doctors eaither take early morning or night English classes in Hogwons or at colleges/universities in their non credit programs. I have had at least 30 doctors in 9 years in my classes. They consider it an honor for their teacher to be a patient. Will give you what you want/need, and will keep everthing private. You will also usually become good friends with their family. Most will not even charge you for office calls. Five years ago I had an MD in My class whose wife is a dentist. He, his wife and his kids and I have been great friends for years. She is giving me dental implants at cost. No profit. Actually, by now she must be losing money because she keeps doing more and more. For 8,000$ I am gettig what she would charge a regular patient about 40,000$. And, I had a friend in the USA do some research by calling differt dentist in USA and asking how much to do (then she gives a list of what has been done or will be done to me.) She is pretending it is for her. They all say by phone it is hard to say, but someplace between 50,000$ to 70,000$. I have posted many times at this site that if you have a student who is a doctor you got it made.
