Did you look on the pension website for the specifics?
http://www.nps.or.kr/
I couldn't find information on treaty with South Africa.

It's on that site.
Click on "National Pension scheme" on the left, and then click on "Foriengers and lump-sum refund' on the sub-menu. About 3 paragraphs down it says "Who is exluded from coverage"
"Those nationals whose country does not mandatorily cover Korean citizens under its pension scheme.
=> Under this rule, only the nationals from the following 17 specified countries ※ do not have to enroll
and pay the NPS contributions.
※ the Republic of South Africa, Nepal, Maldives, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia,
Armenia, Ukraine, Ethiopia, Iran, Egypt, Tonga, Pakistan, Fiji, Cambodia, Singapore "
However, this is just in English, I have NO clue how to navigate the Korean site, and the PDFs I've downloaded have this same infomation in English (again, I can't navigate the Korean page).
When I explained this to my PS, they seemed to understand - I guess I'll know for sure when I don't see a pension deduction on my payslip come the 25th. |

You can always call the pension office during business hours @1355 from any landline phone.
They also have a phone number (in Seoul) for foreigners posted on the English page. |

The NPS has a pdf guide for foreigners hidden somewhere on their website. You can find a copy here: http://safkorea.wordpress.com/downloads/
It's called "Korean pension guide for foreigners". The first page is in Korean, the second in English. SA is listed as the first country which is exempt from pension fund payments.
I printed this out and showed it to my co-teacher. Problem solved. |
