What exactly do you want?

I just want people to never give up fighting for their rights and beliefs no matter what country they are in. If you feel a law is injust I urge to stand against it, do all you can LEGALLY. True you would have to research the local laws to see what you can and can not do. I actually took action by joining local organizations and foreign organizations in Korea that support many causes. I think writing letters to local officials, forming groups or associations, and social campaigns (nothing union-like---review local laws) will make a difference and help change to happen.

Though majority of Koreans won't be willing to help, there are small groups of Koreans willing to help different causes. So we would need to form alliances with these organizations as well as foreign organizations in Korea.

I will note I have done this successfully in the USA. In this country since I don't know everything about it I joined existing organizations with people that have more experience than me.

Specifically which laws?

That is not for me to decide. If you feel a law is unjust then I urge you to stand against it.

I have my causes but it may not be the same for other people that is why I joined organizations that support the same cause.

Oh I do and this is what I get. However, if you believe Koreans don't do this, then you are entitled to your opinion. I do want to note other people will tell you the same.

I am just going to leave it at that.....OK.

I will reference to this link:

You are very much going in the wrong direction. You need to be low-profile when living abroad. Most importantly, as an individual expat, dependent on Korean employers, and behind them, the Korean govt, for your visa: stay out of local politics.

But you seem pretty commited to your point-of-view. You asked for answers and advice by creating this thread. You have mine. As always you may take it or leave it.

I don't think I am being high profile. I am not on TV nor am I published in the newspaper, most of the time I am doing background support. I let the leaders handle the "heavy load". The only reason I would be doing more than background support if I have any contacts I know. Even though I have been here a short time, my fiancee, who works for IFEZ, has introduced me to prominent people that have some confidence in dealing with me than another person.

Then you are being grandiose with your "forming alliances with foreign organizations." It is also unwise to make a record of this on this very public forum.

One other piece of advice: go to your embassy and register your whereabouts with them.

How is being a member of Amesty International so bad? How about supporting UNESCO? How about the American Red Cross (yes they do have American Red Cross in Korea)? How about the Human Rights Watch organization? None of these foreign organizations are outlawed in Korea and it is not outlawed to associate with them.

So no one can punish me for this. If they do then they are breaking Korean laws.

Have any of the above organizations spoken out against the plight of hakwon teachers in Korea? And have they expressed any interest in forming an alliance with ATEK?

OK. Unwisely grandiose and unnecessarily cryptic. Why not just state these things when you started your thread?

I have different causes I fight for unrelated to teaching English. Those are organizations that I helped out on human rights. Though I know at least UNESCO and Amesty International spoke against the treatment of foreign workers in general in Korea. In alliances with ATEK, that would have to be up to the ATEK president. I will just have to pitch it to them.

And what is your position in the UN, the American Red Cross, AI, and Human Rights Watch, again?

In these organizations, I do what anybody can do is support it monetary and tell these organization of problems with human rights. At Amesty International, I paid my dues to be a member but I still only do what a nonmember can do.

When I pointed this out, it was a response to your comment about making alliances with these organizations. If an organization, including other foreign organizations, wanted to make an alliance with these organizations there is nothing illegal about it.

I do want to note; however, I ran my own nonprofit organization and established campaigns for worker's rights, women's rights, and minority rights in the US.

I believe you even more free time than a public school teacher. And nothing to do with it. Refute.

Joining an org like Amnesty and/or paying dues is not the same thing as your cryptic "making alliances with foreign organizations." AI is a fine, credible org (usually). Besides those members who pay dues and help organize and sign petitions on university campuses, however, I believe that most AI analysts are attys and high-power politicians, academics, and entertainers. You are, supposedly, an EFL instructor. I just do not see how you could come by vital human-rights information for such orgs.

With all due respect, I think you are just after attn on this thread. And your English looks funny. I am sometimes naive to catch on to things like this.

In any case, above-board human-rights work, including translating even low-level dox or what-have-you, is an excellent way to contribute to a cause -- wherever you reside and whatever your nationality. As far as the kind of activism you and others seem to advocate on this thread, including "making alliances with foreign organizations," which may be foreign govts, political parties, or unions is a very bad idea and I stand by the advice I have given for anyone who might be thinking otherwise.
