Sigh. I hope this situation is put in perspective, unlike the summer hystrrics. I hope the hit-and-run Com. (as in "Commissioned officer" in the army) sod gets an old-school beat down by MPs.

Any thoughts from the peanut gallery?

Joe

If true and he was off-duty and off-post
Koreans will have jurisdiction and he will be held by the Americans until his Korean court date, unless the USFK commander says he can be held in a Korean jail until trial.
In our system (USA) he is innocent until proven guilty, so it would not be unusual for him to be held by the Americans until his Korean court date.

Keep in mind, Korean law precedent says he only has to pay a fine for this crime and does not have to got to jail.

Funny is Koreans do hit and runs all the time...I haven't seen those incidents hit the news. Yet a soldier does it - you know when in Rome, do as the Romans and it makes international news.

Pretty pathetic standards huh?

Someone should post all the other vehicle fatalities that happened in Korea on Friday.

Let's not get hysterical before anything happens. I hate it when people project how they perceive the Korean community will react to things like this and then blame them based on these perceptions. The accused is subject to Korean law this time which was the principal issue with the young girls killed. He'll be tried just like everyone else, no SOFA to protect him, so what would anyone have to complain about? If the US military intefered and made him walk scott free then there would be riots, but that isn't going to happen. Sh&t happens, Korean people are fully aware that there are fatal traffic accidents in their country.

I wish the idiot kid hadn't driven off though, then it likely wouldn't have even made the news.

Guess we'll all be reading the local news this weekend to see how this pans out. Doesn't look good though . . .

To those on thier 2nd tour of duty. What was it like last year when a similar incident happened? Was it mainly just protests after the acquittal?

A member of the U.S. military in Korea is involved in a fatal motor vehicle accident resulting in the death of a Korean citizen, and you believe it would not be reported by the Korean media had he not left the scene?

This leads me to believe one of the following two statements:

1. You have not been in Korea long enough.

2. You have been in Korea too long.

I'll go with the latter.

Actually, the article identifies him as a "sergeant" (an enlisted man).

I really hope they don't fly him home like they did the others last time. Will he not go to jail, even though he left the scene of the accident?

A "sergeant" is an NCO. You see, any enlisted personnel rank of E-5 or higher is.......... Ah, forget it.

As far as the going to jail part, do all Korean drivers automatically go to jail in similar situations?

Sounds to me like you've already prejudged the case without knowing or caring about anything except he's a member of the U.S. military. That's good enough for you, hey, pal?

Gee, I wonder if anyone else in Korea will feel the same way?
