A one way economy fare can run you about $1500. Since your school is paying for it, why not pony up some extra bucks and go home business class?

My travel agent found a flight back to Canada for $1500 but then I found a biz class ticket home on NorthWest for $2400. After 4 years of teaching and never taking a holiday, I figured why not pony up an extra $900 and have a special treat after 4 years of work?

For an extra $900 you get a short line to check in, extra baggage allowance (I had some pretty heavy bags after 4 years in Korea), and you get to hang out in the biz class lounge. And you get pre-boarding. And you get loads of extra goodies.

The NW biz class lounge at Inchon:

The lie flat seating:

The goodies:

Flew Korea to Japan and then Japan to Detroit. The Japan to Detroit run is on a 747. Road the upper deck. The over heads are kind of small but the window seating has a neat side box, which lets you store stuff and doubles as some extra table space.

1. I don't think my school will give me the money for economy if I don't have an economy ticket.

2. I'm cheap. (Though I might do it if it were only 100-200 extra)

Buy the economy ticket (or let the school buy it) then pay the difference for the upgrade at the airline ticket office or ticket sales counter in the airport. (usually cheaper to upgrade from the ticket office).

IF you have a lot of frequent flier miles from travels here on your vacations you can usually use them for your upgrade (so it can cost as little as $0).

Shop around for them as well. Also, sometimes you can get business seating with economy service (YJ class) in the front of the 747 (as compared to the upper deck) for as little as $100-200 extra.

It doesn't cost anything to ask.

For $900 you could get a great little relaxing holiday in SEAsia and bask in the sun for a week on a beach with a cold drink in hand...

Isn't height and weight a major issue here? I remember a 7 footer from a Russia highschool going over to the US in coach. He had to be pulled out of his seat by the end of the trip.

I just spent 10 days in Thailand and only spent $900! The business class would be wonderful but for what's it's worth I think you can get more bang for your buck elsewhere.

Airmiles or frequent flyer points maybe...Smile

i think the business and first class are a sham
if the company i work for was paying for the ticket, no problem
otherwise, it's people spending a ridiculous amount of cash for a seat with more leg room and a bit better service, but at least you don't get to deal with the rif raff in economy class
that's just me, i'm cheap like that

While I do agree with your point that getting out more is good, I have to say that between the options of trekking and flying business class trekking is far more fucked.

Dude - - do you know how big of a low life this makes you look?

I spent $1200 on a weekend skiing trip with my family last vacation.

This guy shows a little class and the backpackers crawl out of the woodwork.

Why am I not surprised?
