I had a class today . The students were role-playing introductions and I pointed out to one girl that it might be a good idea to mention you are from "South Korea" rather than "Korea" .
She asked me why and I answered that the two countries are seen as very different. At this point she said quite abrasively "No ! We are one" . At which the other kids cheered
was quite thrown and a few questions arose. Exactly how much do they know about the situation in Noth Korea ? How much do they really think they have in common ? What form of propaganda and group think was at play here ? Why did I distinctively feel the defensive attitude was almost one of accusation ? Is there a perception in korea that the west is somehow to blame for their ongoing separation and that if not for the west they would be holding hands and singing kumbya ?
I'll balance this to say that many students previously have stated they do not favor unification. It was just a strange and aggressive response to what I thought was clear ground .. |

I wouldn't want reunification. Hell, if Quebec left and screwed themselves up, I'd tell them to screw off when they wanted to come back. The financial hardship on South Korea would be massive if they got together. It's all about pride, it has nothing to do with the suffering of the people. |

Sorry to hear that you don't understand.
The parents feel the same way.
Though God Help China if they ever do decide to secede the North Korean region for thier own good.
Actually the USA better have a one way ticket out of the country before the South Koreans wage war on China. |

Be very careful when bringing up North Korea with Koreans. Koreans themselves get emotional when discussing North Korea, imagine a foreigner that brings up the subject without knowing all the history and emotion behind it.
Another thing to know is that a large percentage (20% range) most likely remember having a direct relative (grandparents) that is/was from North Korea. |

Yes, I am wrong, damm I knew there was a better word. 
Been here too long, my language is going on me.
An interesting point is if you look at the location of the great wall of China and if you look at the location of goyreo it is interesting how China today claims that area. |

To be fair, this was unclear to most people I talked to before moving here. Most people figured it out, and it went something like this: "What? You better be careful... I hope you mean SK..." At the post office one time, I was told that the USPS didn't send mail to Korea, on account of the terrorism. I had to specify SK, and ask her to look it up in the computer. And my home town has plenty of ethnic Koreans around, so we're not exactly isolated. |
