Hi all,
I'm actually teaching in Vietnam at the moment but I looking at going to Korea in the future.
I'm in my 30's and took the big risk of giving up a career path to follow my heart and travel. As someone who is always mindful of my future, I'm looking at the different options available to me. After teaching for a year now, I realise it's definately for me. Without sounding egotistical, I believe I am quite a good teacher, with older teenagers through to adults.
Ok, now that i have got my TESOL certificate, my BA and a very good professional CV, I'm just wondering if it is worth pursuing any further study. I thoroughly enjoy teachinug adults and students at university level. I'm currently doing a little bit of IELTS teaching and although I'm learning as I go, I'm really enjoying it. Therefore, what do you think? Is it worth furthering my studies? If so, any advice as to what i should study or any career advice would be appreciated.
Thanks!!! |

I think that you should try to get a public school job to start, work here for a year, then decide what you think.
Extra qualifications are never bad, but you've already got more plenty for someone starting out as a newbie in Korea. You can always take a distance Masters once you get here.
Having more qualifications now probably wouldn't be able to help you get a uni job, for example, anyway. You'd need to have some experience here first.
Just come, but first please heed my signature on the left, and don't come.
The economy is falling into inflation. Prices on many things are starting to creep up. Unfortunately, salaries are not (yet). |

It depends what your goals are (specifically where do you plan to teach further and for how many years) and what your financial situation is like. If you really plan on doing this for the next 20 years or so and have some savings, you might want to consider doing an MA in Applied Linguistics or TESOL.
That can allow you to teach English at universities in various countries. Pretty cushy set-up and decent wages (relative to the industry). |

Don't waste your time... Come to Korea and try it on for size first... Then leave and be thankful you didn't put too much effort into it lol |
